District 3 had quite the weekend at Bucknell University during the delayed PIAA diving championships.

The two-day event started Saturday when West York’s Erica Sarver won the girls Class AA state championship, with Big Spring junior Shannon McCabe taking the silver medal.

That performance was followed in the evening by Big Spring senior Dillon Novak winning the AA boys competition.

The weekend closed Sunday night when Hershey senior Jake Hedrick earned gold in the Class AAA boys championship.

Unlike Sarver and Novak, Hedrick’s title came down to the wire. Hedrick scored 485.25 points, a mere 4.05 ahead of Bryce Hock of North Penn, and only 6.5 better than Fox Chapel sophomore Jonah Cagley, who took the bronze.

The Class AAA girls crown was won by North Penn sophomore Paige Burrell, who scored 473.45, besting Taylor Hockenberry of Mars Area by 5.25. Burrell’s teammate Meghan Wenzel won the bronze.

The close of the competitions, also allowed the overall team championships to be determined. In AAA girls, Avon Grove finished in front of North Penn for the title and North Allegheny took the boys team crown.

On Saturday, West York tied for second overall in the girls team standings.

PIAA diving is normally held between preliminaries and finals of the state swimming championships, however they were delayed with the schedule changes forced by winter storm Stella.
