Suburban outswims Gettysburg in key Division II showdown

The Gettysburg boys' swim team finished first in seven of 11 events, but the superior depth of York Suburban allowed the Trojans to take the meet, 93-77, in a key YAIAA Division II meet Monday night at Gettysburg College.

While the Warriors were winning events, Suburban was routinely grabbing second, third and fourth places to more than make up for the points that Gettysburg was earning by finishing first.

"We were really pumped up for this and we've got nothing to be ashamed of," Gettysburg coach Amanda Turner said. "We tried our best, but York Suburban is a little bit deeper than us."

The win keeps the Suburban boys unbeaten in Division II at 2-0, while Gettysburg slips to 2-1.

The Trojan girls had an easier time, winning 119-51 and improving to 2-0 in the division.

Suburban's Karl Schmittle won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and he swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Devon Lonergan also swam on that team and won the 500 freestyle.

Gettysburg received individual wins from senior Logan Hyde (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke), junior Jared Herr (200 freestyle), junior Nico DeAngelo (100 freestyle) and senior Chandler Desotelle (100 backstroke). Hyde, Herr and DeAngelo were also part of the winning relay teams in the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle. Desotelle helped out in the 200 medley and Zach Kiick was part of the 400 freestyle.
