Swimming roundup: Spring Grove boys eke out win

Spring Grove's boys' swimming team needed a victory in the final event of the night to earn a team win against Shippensburg, and Grae Elliot, Jay Kuhn, Brian McGlynn and Collin Ruby delivered in convincing fashion. Spring Grove's 400-yard freestyle relay team pulled away to win in 3 minutes, 38.58 seconds, winning by 17 seconds to secure an 86-85 victory against the visiting Greyhounds.

Elliot proved key for the Rockets earlier in the meet, winning the 100 butterfly as well as the 500 free.

Sam Nonemaker won a pair of events for Shippensburg, taking the 200 IM and 100 free.

Dover 121, Cedar Cliff 55: Casey Marshall, Hunter Link, Tobias Kwasnjuk and Brannon Boyd each won a pair of events, leading the Eagles to a victory over the Colts.

Marshall and Link also swam on a pair of winning relay teams.

Gettysburg 102, South Western 68: Logan Hyde took first in the 100 breaststroke and 500 free, leading the Warriors.

South Western won the majority of events, with Alex Yokem and Ben Shoul each picking up a pair of individual wins.

Despite winning seven of 12 events, the Mustangs weren’t able to produce enough second- and third-place finishes to keep the meet close.

Girls

Shippensburg 90, Spring Grove 86: The Rockets 400 free relay team took first place, but the team could not overcome a deficit as the Greyhounds pulled out a close victory.

The key race was the 100 breaststroke, the penultimate event, which saw the Greyhounds' Madelyn Facchinei take first (1:17.05) before Spring Grove’s Shelby Alwine (1:23.84). Shippensburg's Liana Culbertson’s third-place finish allowed the Greyhounds to essentially lock up the meet.

Mackenzie Miller led the Rockets with a win in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM. Teddi Powell paced the Greyhounds with a win in the 50 and 100 free. She also anchored the Shippensburg 200 free relay to victory.

Cedar Cliff 97, Dover 89: Finishing second and lower all day hurt the youthful Eagles, with their lone victory coming in the meet-closing 400 free relay. Grace Beierschmitt, Madelynn Kinard, Annie Long and Lindsay Brenneman picked up the relay win.

Eagles swimmers narrowly missed on securing individual victories in the 50 and 100 free as each race was won by a Cedar Cliff swimmer by less than a second.
