Spring Grove AD Scott Govern headed to Hershey

Spring Grove athletic director Scott Govern has been hired as the Derry Township School District AD, and Govern said the move to Hershey High School later this year will allow him to spend more time with his family.

Govern, who lives with his family in the Cumberland Valley School District, has been the Spring Grove athletic director since 2012. He was approved by the school board last week and said he will start in Hershey in mid-December.

"Spring Grove's been great to me, the administration's been great, the kids have been wonderful, it's just that I have three sons and I'm missing their sports," Govern said. "I see them on film instead of being at their games. When Hershey opened up, it was an opportunity to be closer to my kids."

Govern spent 13 years as the athletic director for Boiling Springs before starting at Spring Grove. He coached track and field at Boiling Springs, and helmed the Rockets track and field the last two seasons. Before that, he was an assistant football at several high schools and colleges.

"He has a proven track record of success throughout his career as a coach and administrator," said district communications director Dan Tredinnick said. "We wanted a quality individual who can offer something to school and community. His track record indicates that he can do that."

Govern was voted YAIAA Athletic Director of the Year last month, and said he feels proud of the way the athletics culture changed during his tenure at Spring Grove.

"It's more focused on the kids," Govern said. "We're doing everything we can to recognize the kids, and that's been the thing I'm most proud of. Our numbers are increasing as far as kids going out for athletics, so I think the whole atmosphere has changed."
