Gettysburg boys' soccer wins big over West York

Prior to Thursday, Gettysburg had met West York four times in boys soccer since the start of 2014 with the Warriors winning 1-0 in each match and three of them needing overtime to be decided.

The schools' latest meeting wasn't nearly as close with Gettysburg storming to a 6-0 victory on a rainy and raw Thursday afternoon at West York in YAIAA Division II action.

Gettysburg (10-0, 6-0 YAIAA II) held its third straight opponent without a shot on goal or a corner. The Warriors have now shutout five straight opponents and have outscored their opponents this season, 47-4.

"Gettysburg is going to come at you and they're a very talented team everywhere on the field," West York head coach Brent Duffy said. "I read a few places from a few different people that they are going to have a special season and I have to agree with that. They were definitely running on all cylinders today."

Adam Yingling scored four goals for the Warriors, jumping his season total to 13 and his career-goal count to 40.

"We possessed the ball well and created opportunities today, just like the last time we faced them," Yingling said. "The difference this time was that we finished the chances we had."

The match was scoreless for the first 16 1/2 minutes before Matt Yingling put Gettysburg in front, scoring off an assist from Connor Weikert with 23:27 left in the opening half. Yingling's shot from 15 yards out slipped between Bulldogs keeper Darian McCauley and the near post on the left side.

Adam Yingling pocketed the next three Gettysburg goals over a 10-minute span, wrapping a pair of penalty kick goals around one that was assisted by Drew Riggle.

The first PK was a result of a foul in the box drawn by Alex Cowden at the 20:51 mark. The second PK came after Matt Yingling was fouled in the box with 10:26 left. In between, Riggle played a long ball to Adam, whose shot beat McCauley but hit the right post. Yingling kept pursuing the ball and finished it with 13:06 left.

"These guys seem to play better when they face the better teams on our schedule," Gettysburg head coach Scott Hancock said. "(Assistant coaches) Ian Hancock and Andy Riggle did a great job of preparing the guys to play while I was out of the country last week. They came up with a great gameplan and everything clicked for us today."

Just 30 seconds into the second half, Adam Yingling found the back of the net yet again off of a drop pass from Matt Yingling. That scoring sequence started a parade of substitutes for both sides.

West York (4-4-1, 3-3) still couldn't mount much of an attack and the Warriors finished off the scoring when Nate Jones scored off an assist from Cade Wilhelm at the 1:49 mark.

Gettysburg held an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-0 edge in corners.

The Warriors return to action with a road match against Dover on Saturday at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, West York next takes to the field on Monday when York Suburban comes to town for a 4 p.m. start.
