Gettysburg boys' soccer got off to a rip-roaring start Saturday.

The Warriors posted two goals a little more than three minutes into its match with Biglerville, and the Warriors cruised past the Canners, 6-1, in the season opener for both sides Saturday morning during a three-team tournament at Gettysburg.

Matt Yingling started the Warriors' scoring with 38:13 left in the opening half off of a double assist from Adam Yingling and Connor Weikert. Weikert played the ball forward to Adam, who fed a through ball to Matt, and he finished with a shot to the right side of the net.

Just eighty seconds later, Gettysburg drew a foul inside the box, and Adam Yingling buried the penalty kick to boost the lead to 2-0.

"This being a rivalry game, we wanted a quick start today," Gettysburg head coach Scott Hancock said. "We knew that Biglerville would come to play, and we wanted to take some wind out of them early on."

Alex Cowden bumped the Gettysburg lead to 3-0 on what appeared to be a mis-hit cross that he struck from 25 yards out on the right flank. It eluded the jump of Canner keeper Mitchell Thomas and nestled into the net just below the cross bar.

"You could maybe call Alex's goal a little lucky, but when you're doing things the right way, like he does, sometimes you make your own luck," Hancock said.

The lead held steady at 3-0 until Drew Wivell and Matt Yingling engaged in a little give-and-go action with Yingling assisting on Wivell's marker with 34:07 left in the match. Wivell then set up Adam Yingling's goal with 29:40 remaining.

Biglerville (0-1) avoided the shutout when Jose Cernas scored with 29:08 to play off an assist from Connor Griest.

"I didn't feel that we did too bad today," Biglerville head coach Jebb Nelson said. "We made some mistakes, and they capitalized on them. They finish better than they did last year, and Adam is so fast. Gettysburg is a great team, and they're going to go very far this year."

Weikert put a bow on the scoring when he was assisted by Matt Yingling with 23:02 left in the match.

Gettysburg (1-0) held a 17-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-3 edge in corners.

"We played to our expectations for today. Not for the season, but for the day," Hancock said. "We didn't play dumb today, but we need to play smarter than we did. We gave the ball away far too easily, at times and plays like that can result in giving up goals."

Gettysburg met Penn Manor for its second game of the day and jumped out to a four-goal lead en route to an 8-1 victory. The Comets beat the Canners, 6-1.
