Dominant Day powers Kennard-Dale past York Catholic in District 3 quarterfinals

Kennard-Dale's Morgan Day continued her assault on the national record book Thursday afternoon against rival York Catholic in the District 3 girls' lacrosse tournament quarterfinals.

The Rams used dominant goaltending from Clare Boone to build an early lead, and Day put the game out of reach with seven goals in the 16-12 win.

Day is now three goals shy of tying the national record set by North Carolina's Megan Shortt.

She will get a shot at the record at 7 p.m. Tuesday when the Rams play a district semifinal against Manheim Township at Hershey High School.

"She meant the same thing she's meant to them in every game," said York Catholic head coach Rob Linthicum. "She's no secret. We know coming in we can never stop her, just hope to contain her to 3-4 goals max."

Lyndsey Duty means as much to Day as Day does to Kennard-Dale.

The senior midfielder totaled three goals and four assists, including helpers on three of Day's goals.

The pair are often called "Batman and Robin."

"When you have a close team, it benefits on the field," Day said. "(Lyndsey) has a head for the game. We work together in amazing ways."

Duty found Emmie Dressel cutting to the net for the first goal, and seven minutes in, Day made it 2-0, tapping in a feed from Hannah Bracey at the back door.

Then, Clare Boone was tested between the pipes.

The freshman came through with flying colors, stopping eight of the first nine shots she faced.

"She's played big in big games all year long," Kennard-Dale head coach Kelly Wetzel said. "She was on fire."

Boone stared down Lindsey China on a free shot a minute into the game. She flared her stick out to the left to deny the point blank shot.

Immediately after Day's first goal, Boone stopped Lisa Casagrande's shot with her head.

A minute later, she shut down Amanda Tufano's bounce shot with her midsection.

Tufano was robbed again later as Boone kicked out her left leg to deny another bounce shot.

"Some people say to come out and be aggressive and others say to stay back. I just trust my instinct to do whatever I have to to stop the shot," Boone said.

While she was playing human wall, the Rams attack was extending the lead.

Kennard-Dale scored five goals in 6:20 to push ahead 7-1.

Bracey started the run by shimmying between two defenders and slicing to the middle to score with 14:40 left before halftime.

Two minutes later, Duty dipped her shoulder and slid past her defender before dribbling a long bounce shot over the line to make it 4-1.

Morgan Bowings' ground ball and incisive pass set up Maddie Day a few minutes later.

The younger Day sister stick-faked and dangled around a defender before scoring.

Twenty seconds later, Maddie Day's pass to Dressel posted up in front of the net and led to the Rams' sixth goal. As goalie Domenica Shellenberger went for her left shoulder, Dressel went right and buried the shot.

Morgan Day made it 7-1 as Bowings pulled up and found her in the middle.

York Catholic went on a 6-2 run to pull within 9-7 early in the second half.

But three KD goals, including two by Morgan Day, pushed the lead to five.

Day closed the game with two goals in the final 9 minutes to put the contest away.
