H.S. SPORTS: Mid Penn announces realignment for 2016-17
The Mid Penn Conference almost never stays the same when it conducts its realignment proceedings every two years.
Before the 2014-15 season, the biggest changes involved losing Gettysburg and Susquenita, and trying to adjust in the Colonial and Capital Divisions to make up for that.
For the next two-year cycle, which begins in 1016-17, the biggest changes appear to be Mifflin County moving from the Commonwealth to the Colonial Division for football, and the complete reorganization of girls volleyball.
Those changes were approved by unanimous vote at a Mid Penn realignment committee meeting on Monday.
Mifflin County, a Class AAAA school, will now play area teams Greencastle-Antrim, Shippensburg, James Buchanan and Waynesboro in football, and not Chambersburg.
The Colonial will now have eight teams, including those five, plus Big Spring, Northern York and West Perry, which switched places with East Pennsboro from the Capital.
That leaves the Commonwealth and Keystone with seven teams each, so the league will schedule one crossover game between the two divisions.
Girls volleyball currently has three divisions, two with nine schools and one with eight. Starting in 2016-17, there will be four divisions – Commonwealth (8 teams, including Chambersburg), Keystone (7, with Greencastle, Shippensburg and Waynesboro), Capital (6, with James Buchanan) and Colonial (5).
The conference will schedule two crossover games between the Capital and Colonial Divisions.
In boys and girls soccer, Mifflin County moves from the Commonwealth to the Keystone, and Bishop McDevitt and Susquehanna Township leave the Keystone for the Capital. Northern York then moves from the Capital to join the Colonial.
In field hockey, Carlisle and West Perry will now reside in the Colonial with G-A, Ship and Waynesboro.
In golf, Northern has moved into the Colonial, which include all the Franklin County schools, plus Big Spring.
Sports that remain unchanged include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls swimming, boys lacrosse and boys tennis. Baseball, softball, girls lacrosse, boys and girls cross country, swimming, girls tennis, boys and girls track & field, boys volleyball and wrestling have minimal changes.
