Play at the plate dooms Fairfield in PIAA quarterfinals

The Fairfield softball team saw its season come to an end with a 4-3 loss to District 1 champion Bristol, Thursday, in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class 2A tournament at Lyons Park in Fleetwood.

Trailing 4-3, Fairfield put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Ryleigh Bolyard singled to center field. The Bristol centerfielder threw home, catching the Green Knight runner for the final out.

A two-error first inning put the District 3 champion Green Knights in a 2-0 hole. Fairfield answered two innings later with an Ashley Roberts RBI single and Jordan Pryor sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fifth, Bristol took the lead with an RBI single to make it 3-2. The resilient Green Knights answered in the bottom half of that inning, scoring on an error.

Bristol took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI ground out after a lead-off triple.

Bristol will face District 11 champion Minersville in Monday's semifinal. Fairfield's season came to a close at 14-8.
