The Central York softball team ran into the defending PIAA champions in Hempfield Area and Notre Dame commit Morgan Ryan in the first round of the PIAA Class 6A tournament on Tuesday.

Ryan and the Spartans knocked off the Panthers 1-0 at California University of Pennsylvania.

Ryan, who was recently named Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania shut down the Panthers, striking out seven in a complete-game effort.

Ryan also provided the only run of the game, hitting a solo home run over the center-field fence in the bottom of the fifth.

Courtney Coppersmith pitched well for the YAIAA champs, striking out six and allowing just four hits.

In the third inning of the scoreless contest, Central York had an opportunity to take a lead after loading the bases on Ryan with two outs. Unfortunately, Coppersmith grounded out to Ryan to end the frame, and the only key scoring chance for the Panthers.
