Red Land's seven goals more than enough in blowout of Mifflin County

LEWISTOWN >> Red Land cashed in on its first good opportunity of the day and never looked back.

When the dust settled the Patriots ripped Mifflin County, 7-0, on Thursday in a Mid Penn girls' soccer game at Mifflin County High School.

About six minutes in, Red Land's Jamie Carlson entered a corner and put it right in the box on the foot of Kali Wingle, who scored past Huskies goalkeeper Mackenzie Bressler to quickly make it 1-0.

"We have a few different plays that we run for corner kicks and the one that we ran for that play, we knew we were going to go out and they just hustled to get to it," Red Land coach Jamie Miller said. "(They) didn't give up on it and put it away. It was a good effort."

The Patriots had another great opportunity on the offensive end, but the shot was stoned by Bressler to keep it 1-0 visitors.

Two more golden chances followed for Red Land.

Kaylie Derrickson's attempt was just wide, then some great ball movement resulted in another near-miss.

Rhyan Socash beat her defender and crossed one to the middle to Taylor Snyder, who found Wingle, whose shot went wide with around 18 minutes to play in the half. Mifflin County had what looked to be a breakaway chance with 15 minutes to play, but Taylor Wilson, who was racing down by herself, looked to pass.

Wilson's pass found a Red Land defender, however, who cleared to end the threat.

Not long after, Derrickson got a breakaway of her own after she took a pass from Carlson and made it count when her shot found the far corner of the net, to make it 2-0

Savannah Metz made it 3-0 off a rebound and the Patriots were rolling into the half.

Following a Mifflin County corner attempt out of intermission, Red Land got a pair of good offensive chances and cashed in on a pass from Derrickson to Socash to make it 4-0.

"That was one of our goals to come out here today (to make chances count)," Miller said. "We had two really hard games starting our season....We were really struggling with creating chances and putting them in the back of the net. One of our goals was to try to finish the chances we were creating. I was happy and proud of the girls for doing that."

Most of the day, it was Red Land getting behind the Huskies defense to get in scoring situations.

That was necessary for Wingle this time.

She found another way to score with 24 minutes left in the game when she kicked a laser from about 30 yards out past a jumping Bressler for her second goal of the day and a 5-0 advantage.

"Kali's tough in there," Miller said. "She's doing a great job at center-mid. She's physical and looking to play balls and slot balls through. She got herself two goals today, so I'm happy for her, because she's not typically a person who scores a ton of goals for us. I'm really happy for her today."

The visitors added two more goals to settle the score at 7-0.

Red Land (1-2, 1-2 Mid-Penn) will travel to Gettysburg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
