Day cements York Suburban's victory

York Suburban senior Molly Day scooped up the loose ball by the top of the key as the final buzzer sounded at West York High School and pumped her fist.

Day and the Trojans had plenty to celebrate after Friday evening's 38-33 YAIAA Division II girls' basketball win over West York.

The York College-bound Day helped lock down the win against West York by going 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 70 seconds and finished with a game-high 13 points.

"We want the ball in her hands at the end of games," said York Suburban coach Jess Barley. "We are confident she'll step up and make big shots. She has a confidence about her, and we have a lot of confidence in her."

The Trojans also completed a regular-season sweep of the reigning Division II champs and cemented their berth in the upcoming YAIAA playoffs.

York Suburban (17-3, 12-2 Division II) has won three straight since suffering a six-point loss at Susquehannock on Jan. 20. The Division II-leading Warriors also beat York Suburban by 12 back on Dec. 15. That was the only game this season that the Trojans' defense allowed more than 50 points in a game.

The Trojans used their defense to harass West York into a 4-for-24 shooting performance from the field in the opening half while getting the Bulldogs to turn the ball over 18 times in the game.

"We are not a good shooting team," said West York coach Darrell Wildasin. "It's been that way all season long. I felt like we were moving chess pieces around trying to figure out how to get a bucket."

West York (12-6, 8-3 Division II) trailed by five at halftime and by as many as eight in the third quarter. The Bulldogs closed to within a point with 6:59 to play after a Elle Stine layup but could not regain the lead it last had in the opening quarter.

"We knew a run would be coming," Barley said. "Two good teams like this, we knew each team would have its share. We knew they would punch and we wanted to punch back and weather their storms. We just found a way to get it done."
