Furious rally pushes Warriors to win

Susquehannock girls' basketball coach Dave Schreiner said his team left Glen Rock around 4:15 on Tuesday afternoon for York Suburban High School and its YAIAA Division II showdown with the Trojans.

The Warriors game took a little longer to get there.

Susquehannock erased a nine-point opening half with a 34-point second half in rallying from behind in a 43-31 win over York Suburban in a battle of previously unbeaten teams.

"You don't ever like to start a game like that, but I like the way we won," Schreiner said. "We hung in there and turned the corner. I like the way we played. This might one of the best second halves of girls' basketball I've seen in a while."

Freshman guard Jayla Galbreath, who is generously listed on the Susquehannock roster as 5-foot-5, came off the bench to spark the Warriors second-half run by connecting on three 3-point goals during an 18-point third quarter, and adding another trey in the team's 16-point final period. Teammate Ashley Stone, a 5-foot-11 senior, also came through with 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half.

"All the kids helped, but obviously, (Galbreath) was a big key," Schreiner said. "Those threes were at the right time. All the kids showed a lot of resilience in this one."

The Warriors erased a 10-point halftime deficit quickly during the third quarter, as York Suburban committed two turnovers in the first 30 seconds of the second half. Stone hit a 3-pointer with 6:21 left in the third to tie the game at 19-all and the two teams took a 27-27 tie into the final eight minutes.

York Suburban faltered in the fourth quarter, shooting 2-of-11 from the field while turning the ball over six times.

"Against good teams, those things add up," said York Suburban head coach Jess Barley. "The girls played their hearts out and played hard. I'll definitely take the blame on some of that. When they went to a zone, I probably should have made some adjustments."

Susquehannock (6-0, 4-0 Division II) had held opponents to 21 points or less in its past two games coming in and has now surrendered 40 points or more only once this season — in the season opener with Donegal.

York Suburban (4-1, 3-1 Division II) had not allowed 30 or more points in a game this season until Tuesday's game.

"We knew the run was coming," Barley said. "Susquehannock is too good of a team to not make a run. We told the girls that in the locker room at halftime. Credit to their shooters. They all stepped up."

The Trojans got out to the halftime lead thanks in part by six first-half points and nine first-half rebounds from 5-9 senior forward Molly Day. Five-foot-10 sophomore Ali Reinecker and 6-1 junior Parker Faircloth-Henise both added four first-half points each on the inside.
