Kloster scores 1000th in Northeastern's OT win

LEWISTOWN — It was Northeastern' senior Jordyn Kloster's night, and everyone else just seemed to be along for the ride.

Kloster scored 31 points to go over 1,000 points for her career, pulled down 13 rebounds and sank the tying basket with three seconds left in regulation as the Bobcats beat Shippensburg, 55-49, in overtime in the opener of the Husky Club tip-off tournament Friday night at Mifflin County High School.

"I was really proud of the way we played as a team," Kloster said. "Of course the girls wanted me to score my 1,000th point, but we all wanted to win. I just kept dishing and they kept giving it back to me. Everyone did a good job of playing together."

Courtney Coy hit back-to-back 3s to erase a 11-point fourth quarter deficit and put Ship up, 43-41, with 15 seconds in regulation

"We had nothing to lose, we were trying to put pressure on them for the first time all game," Shippensburg coach Andrew Markel said. "A lot of them played JV games, so I figured they might be tired. We're just trying to put pressure on and hit quick shots and try to get back into it. We were up two with six seconds left, I thought we had it."

Kloster answered with a steal and layup to send the game to overtime, where the Bobcats staved off Ship thanks to four clutch free throws from Kendra Meyer with under a minute left in OT.

"(Jordyn)'s a hard worker," Northeastern coach Gary Sutton said. "She's got a heck of an outside shot that she didn't get to show off tonight. She really worked hard for us on the inside. I thought there at the end with our kids down, I said we had to face-guard here and get a loose ball somehow. She got it and knew where to go with it. We got lucky, and I thought our kids played pretty well in the overtime

Kloster paced the Bobcats in the first quarter with eight points and six rebounds, while Mariah Martin scored five of Shippensburg's first 11 points.

Martin made a pair of free throws to even the game at 11 early in the second quarter, but Kloster came back with a go-ahead lay-in to put Northeastern back up 13-11.

Kloster's pair of free throws with 2:58 to go in the second quarter gave her the 1,000 points. She scored 16 of Northeastern's first 19 points.

Coy answered with a 3 for Ship. Meyer added a layup but missed the ensuing free throw to push the score to 23-18 at the break.

Liz Logan and Martin added back-to-back jumpers to close it to 35-28 after three quarters, to set up Shippensburg's furious rally in the fourth.

Coy's 3 closed the lead to a point at 41-40 with 41.5 seconds to play, and she put Ship up 43-41 with another trey.

Kloster stole a pass and made the layup with three seconds left to send it to OT, where the Bobcats prevailed.

"Coach just saying to just relax, it will happen for us," Kloster said. "This is what we work for, it will happen. I just relaxed and that's how it happened."

The Bobcats will face Mifflin County on Saturday night in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Shippensburg plays Williamsport in the consolation game. Mifflin County earned an 86-68 victory in Friday's other first-round game.
