Hershey girls outpace Bermudian Springs

After a sluggish three quarters to be expected from the first basketball game of the year, the Hershey Trojans opened the final quarter against Bermudian Springs with newfound energy.

The teams met for their opening game of the year at the 27th annual Northern York girls' Tip-Off Tournament at Northern High School, where Hershey posted a 32-24 victory.

Trying to build on its 20-14 lead heading into the fourth, the Trojans hit the boards, earning several second shots off of offensive rebounds. With coach Ronald Moore exhorting the team from the sidelines, sophomore Maggie Miller was fouled while sinking a putback shot.

The Eagles countered with the game's only 3-pointer by senior Gabby Emeigh to make it 23-17, but Hershey quickly resumed its relentless attack.

Senior Emma Winter hit a mid-range jumper, and Hershey made a qiuck steal at the other end. After running a patient pick-and-roll play, junior Mikala Awde banked in a short shot.

After another steal, the Trojans whipped the ball around the perimeter with confidence. At one point, senior Caroline Cotton held the ball just outside the 3-point line when Moore casually told her, "Shoot it. Go ahead, shoot it. You're open."

Cotton passed on the shot, but the offhand suggestion from the coach made her laugh. After another steal, Cotton grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 29-17.

Although clearly tiring as coach Kari Cover and her staff called for repeated full-court pressing, the Eagles refused to give up. Sophomore Ally Wolf made a steal and scored a layup.

That was followed by another steal and a hustling offensive rebound and putback by Emeigh. She was fouled on the shot and made the free throw. The 5-foot-6 Emeigh led the Eagles with seven points.

The Bermudian Springs' rally ran out of time and Hershey finished off the victory. The Trojans fielded a balanced attack with seven players recording field goals. Miller had seven points, while senior Rachel Groves and sophomore Cassandra Zugay added six apiece.

The Eagles started three sophomores who had little experience coming in, Cover said, adding that she was pleased with how her team came out in the second half.

"In the third quarter, we came out and hit some shots and closed the gap a little," she said. "The effort was good. They never gave up and fought to the end."

In the opening varsity game, the visiting Littlestown Thunderbolts scored 21 of their 23 points in the second half to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. The home Polar Bears could not keep pace offensively and fell 23-15.
