Central York fends off feisty Bearcats

The Central York Panthers outslugged the William Penn Bearcats on a chilly night Friday, sending the Panthers' seniors — making their final regular season appearance — off in style with a dominating 41-24 win.

However, the game didn’t get off to an easy start for the Panthers, thanks to a few electrifying plays courtesy of some of the Bearcats playmakers on offense and special teams.

Not even halfway through the second quarter Central York found itself trailing 12-7 after giving up an 80-yard punt return to sophomore Dayjure Stewart, and a 40-yard touchdown run by junior Khalid Dorsey.

But the Panthers didn’t panic and made proper adjustments.

“I think we came out a little tense,” said Central York head coach Josh Oswalt. “It was senior night and we were a little tense, so we made a couple of adjustments.”

The Panthers would go on to outscore the Bearcats 31-12 the rest of the game, thanks to a balanced offensive attack led by senior running back Noreaga Goff, who carried the ball 26 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Panthers quarterback Cade Pribula would complete just six passes in the game, but he made each one count as he threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite the loss and finishing the season 1-9 (1-6), the Bearcat flashed young talent at the skill positions.

Dorsey racked up 102 rushing yards on just eight carries before going down with an injury. Fellow running back Stewart, who flashed game breaking speed on his 80 yard punt return. Wide receiver Robert Rideout, who had two receptions for 78 yards Friday night, is also a sophomore.

“The future is bright,” said William Penn head coach Russ Stoner. “We have a lot of young guys and they’re learning and growing.”

Central York’s head coach agreed with that assessment.

“Russ is doing a great job with that team over there,” said Oswalt. “They have a lot of young talent, especially on offense.”

The Panthers finish the regular season at 7-3 (5-2) with a playoff berth likely in store for them, but they know there’s still work to be done moving forward.

“We need to fine-tune all aspects of our team getting ready for the playoffs” said Oswalt. “We gotta be able to run, throw and take care of business either way. We just need to continue to grow as a team.”
