York Suburban makes Dover pay for turnovers
Coming into Friday's YAIAA Division II showdown with Dover, the York Suburban defense had forced 11 turnovers for the season.
The Trojans defense added to that number significantly by forcing four Eagles turnovers to remain unbeaten in division play with a 29-13 victory.
"I thought the defense really played well," Trojans head coach Andy Loucks said. "We didn't start out too good (on offense), we turned the ball over two times in the first couple plays. We would bend on defense, but we didn't break."
The teams combined for six first-half turnovers, including trading turnovers on three straight plays early on in the first quarter.
Despite the turnovers, the Eagles (2-6, 1-3 Division II) stayed in the game until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, in large part thanks to the Dover defense.
"They are a good football team and are much better than their record," Loucks said. "They lost a couple of close games and have played some good teams."
Suburban (6-2, 4-0) led 16-6 at halftime, but Dover closed the gap with a touchdown pass from Alan Hansel to Brady Bowman with 5:26 to play in the third quarter.
Dover's first two possessions in the fourth quarter resulted in a turnover on downs and a punt. York Suburban added to its lead with a 2-yard Teague Hoffman touchdown run with 5:03 to play.
That score was set up by a 29-yard pass play by Ben Igo to Willie Batty as the Eagles packed the box to stop the run.
Suburban added a late touchdown with less than 2:00 to play to put the game away.
On a breezy evening, neither team had its passing game working efficiently. Suburban passed for 70 yards, and Dover threw for only 68.
"That wind was crazy," Loucks said. "That wind really messed us up with that stuff (the passing game)."
Suburban's offense was led by Jadon Haynes' 105 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
Dover's Derek Arevalo's 145 rushing yards paced the Eagles. He scored the Eagles' first touchdown on a 65-yard run in the first quarter.
