Fairfield posts first shutout in school history

It was a historic night for Fairfield's defense Friday, as the Green Knights kept an opponent off the scoreboard for the first time in school history.

Fairfield improved to 3-0 on the season with a 21-0 home win over Smithsburg. The Green Knights now head into division play having given up just 25 points in three games.

"We played a team that ran the option, and we played assignment football and swarmed to the ball," Fairfield coach Darwin Seiler said.

Quarterback Darian Mort provided much of the offense for the Green Knights on Friday, throwing a 17-yard touchdown to Trystan Griffith and adding a score on the ground. Running back Charlie Burnett also added a score from about 10-yards out.

A year after going 1-9 last season, Fairfield is undefeated heading into division play. Seiler said he believes the team's early schedule has prepared it for the rest of the season.

"I think the nice thing for us, each challenge got progressively harder and it allowed us to have success and challenged us," Seiler said. "Our goal every year is to be a district qualifier, and to do that you’re gonna have to play good in your division.”
