Emig emerges as big-play threat for Red Lion

Waynesboro matched Red Lion big play for big play in the first half of the teams' season opener Friday.

In the end, though, Lions' quarterback Sam Emig had too many big plays up his sleeve.

The Red Lion senior was money on back-to-back crucial passes early in the fourth quarter, with Ben Frey taking the second in for a touchdown from 25 yards out to help turn a close game into a 38-14 rout at their Horn Field home.

One play earlier, Emig had found Paul Jones for a 35-yard gain to spark his team after a scoreless third quarter. Emig then connected with Frey over the middle to extend the Red Lion lead to 24-14 with 9:02 remaining.

A three-and-out later, it was Jones' turn to make short work of a short field. The senior took the handoff around end for a 38-yard TD and a 31-14 advantage.

Red Lion and Waynesboro combined for four touchdowns in the first half, all coming from 60 yards or more away. Emig kept it himself on the Lions' first play from scrimmage, heading to the right, and not stopping until Red Lion had a quick six just 14 seconds into the game.

His next carry was a long touchdown as well, albeit to the other side of the field, and Red Lion was on the verge of blowing out the Indians four plays from scrimmage into the game. Emig led all runners with 146 yards on 13 carries.

Waynesboro regrouped in the second quarter to tie it at 14-14. Brady Beckner looked to be stopped at midfield on third down at one point, but emerged from the scrum to take it to the house on a 60-yard carry. Brady Riddell lofted it down the sideline to Cameron Keck for a 60-yard TD on the next drive to even the score.

Emig's 32-yard field goal in the final minute of the half put the Lions back in front, 17-14. It was a lead that held up, thanks to two missed field goals for Waynesboro early in the fourth quarter.

A late pick-six of Riddell by Denny Dennison rounded out the scoring.

Red Lion is at Daniel Boone next Friday.
