York-Adams Week 8 football leftovers: Hanover gets a scare on a wild night of special teams

The homecoming crowd in Hanover packed Sheppard & Myers Stadium on Friday in anticipation of seeing big things from the undefeated Nighthawks. Senior Resean Williams delivered after throwing a small scare into the Hanover faithful.

The opening kickoff bounced over Williams' head, but he did not panic, picking up the ball at the 15-yard line. Williams veered right and took off through the York County Tech kickoff coverage team for an 85-yard touchdown. Devon Bell took care of the last defender with a crushing block at midfield to spring Williams.

That play set off a wild night of special teams. York Tech almost became the first team to lead Hanover after blocking a second-quarter field goal attempt. The Hawks reacted late to the loose ball and David Porter nearly broke through for a long gain.

In the third quarter, Hanover had Tech backed up on a fourth-and-17. The Spartans lined up for a punt, but the ball went over Demarius Wiggins' head and into the end zone. The senior quarterback/punter managed to elude a sure safety by shaking off two Hanover tacklers. He then screamed down the right side with a 28-yard run for a first down.

Hanover had held Tech to zero yards of total offense in the second half before that play, but the spark could not ignite a Tech comeback as Hanover re-gained control for a 53-16 win.

Division III intrigue

Biglerville is engaged in a four-way battle for supremacy in YAIAA Division III. Friday, the Canners were coming off a tough 27-20 loss to York Catholic in Week 7.

With division-leading Hanover looming in Week 9 and rival Bermudian Springs on the docket for Week 10, the Canners had to stay focused on the task at hand in Week 8: Littlestown.

The Canners did that by defeating the Bolts, 41-20. Coupled with Bermudian's win against York Catholic on Friday, Biglerville is set up to have at least a share of the division title if it can win its final two games of the year.

"After what happened last week, we were laser-focused on Littlestown all week," Biglerville head coach Alex Ramos said. "We told the kids that it was a three-game season coming into this week and we're happy that we got the win (Friday)."

Biglerville and Bermudian are both 4-1 in division play. The Eagles' loss came to Hanover, while the Nighthawks are 5-0. York Catholic dropped to 3-2 with its Week 8 loss and will need to win its final two games, plus get help to grab a piece of the division title.

"We'll enjoy this one tonight," Ramos said. "But come (Saturday), it's all about preparing for Hanover."
