Preseason boys’ volleyball rankings are out, and they are littered with familiar names, especially in Class 3A.

The top five Class 3A teams, as determined by the Pa. Volleyball Coaches’ Association, have won a combined 21 PIAA titles. And of the top five, four are from District 3, which includes the York-Adams, Mid Penn and Lancaster-Lebanon leagues.

North Allegheny, with five state titles, sits atop Class 3A and is the only non-District 3 team in the top five. NA, from the District 7 WPIAL, is followed by Central Dauphin (one title), Central York (six titles), defending champion Hempfield (nine crowns) and Penn Manor.

Governor Mifflin and Dallastown are the other District 3 teams in the Class 3A top 10.

Although some of the names are familiar in Class 2A, the titles pale in comparison to 3A. Ambridge, which rings in at No. 3, is the only top-five team with a state title. Four-time defending champion Northeastern, with seven titles overall, starts the season at No. 6.

Beaver County Christian School out of District 7 is the top-ranked team, followed by Manheim Central of District 3. Saegertown and Cambridge Springs, both in District 10, round out the top five.

The boys’ volleyball season kicks off on March 28.
