Larell Anderson is efficient with his time.
He has to be in order to accomplish what's ahead of him this weekend. The William Penn senior, who secured YAIAA golds in the 300-meter hurdles and 400 relay last Friday, will run both events this weekend in Shippensburg for the District 3 track and field championships.
He also has a play in York on Friday and Saturday nights.
Consider Wednesday a dress rehearsal on multiple fronts. Anderson takes a ride from William Penn assistant coach Stu Krise from the Strand Capitol to Small Field, where he spends about 40 minutes. After working on baton handoffs with his relay teammates, sprinting and sharpening his hurdle timing, Anderson again takes off.
Practice is sandwiched between preparation for this weekend's play and a job. A few days this week might be slow compared to this weekend. On Saturday, Anderson must make the 50-mile drive from Shippensburg for his dancing role in "Aida," a musical written by Elton John and Tim Rice. The show begins at 7 p.m. each night.
Anderson's latest Class AAA race is tentatively scheduled for 2:10 p.m. on Saturday.
"I think we made a mistake. We should have had him run the 110s," coach Tony Jones said. "He might have been top four, but he didn't feel comfortable."
He also would have been busier and needed to run Friday, as well. Anderson will take the break, considering his schedule. He has set high goals for the 300 hurdles. Last season, Anderson sat on the cusp of qualifying and found out just a day or two in advance that he qualified, so he didn't train.
This season, Anderson has lowered his personal best in the 300 hurdles with each big event. He enters Saturday's 12:30 p.m. race — which comes after the Bearcats' 400 relay and before their 1,600 relay — as the sixth seed. His 39.38-second time was set Friday in Dallastown.
"I've been getting lower at every invitational," Anderson said. "It's my last year. I decided I wanted to make this event the one I'd be the best at."
Anderson wants to run the 400 hurdles in college and thinks he will attend California University of Pennsylvania, joining former teammates Greg Freeland and Anderson Novalin.
With an interest in majoring in graphic design with a minor in literature, Anderson's hurdling renaissance comes to a head Saturday. He might need a second wind to perform once more later that night.
BACK FOR MORE >> South Western junior Lynne Mooradian, fresh off four YAIAA golds Friday, will run three events this weekend: the 100 and 200 dashes, plus the 300 hurdles.
Don't think of it as a considerable break.
"That is really too tough for anybody I'd say at the triple-A level," South Western coach Bruce Lee said.
Mooradian ran in four events last year at the district and state championships. She did so in effort to pursue a school record in the 400 relay, which South Western achieved at the PIAA meet. Mooradian went out for four events again Friday in Dallastown but subbing the 300 hurdles for a 400 relay. She called the effort "states hard."
Before this season, Mooradian didn't run the 300 hurdles. She picked it up while training last summer for the heptathlon. Despite being new at it, Mooradian has the third best time among 300 hurdlers.
WHERE IT STARTED >> The Dallastown girls' 1,600 relay team made its first splash this season in April at Shippensburg, when the Wildcats' foursome won the event at the difficult Jack Roddick Invitational.
After winning a YAIAA title in the event Friday, the foursome of Emma Kange, Taylor Forrester, Haven Evans and Amari Johnson agreed that early run was their "coming out party" as a group.
"That's when we knew had something special, but I don't think we knew how special it was," said Kange, a senior who's joined by a first-year runner in Johnson and two sophomores.
They are seeded ninth in the 1,600 relay, which closes the weekend's track events at 2:10 p.m. Saturday.
CROWDED FIELD >> The Class AA girls' pole vault is nearly a YAIAA event. Six of the top seven and all but 12 of the competitors are from the league. Delone Catholic's Grace Riedel is the top seed with her school record jump of 11-6 set at last week's league championship.
Seeded third is Delone junior Tiffany Small, who jumped 10-3 this season.
After winning the YAIAA title and setting a school mark, which she already owned, Riedel laughed at her teammate's suggestion that she will break it next year.
"She can tie it," Riedel said.
TRIPLE JUMP AND RUN >> Hanover's Deandre Kerr not only will compete in three Class AA events this weekend, he is also seeded no worse than third entering his events. The Hanover junior will run both the 110 and 300 hurdles, while also take part in the triple jump.
