Relays lead Littlestown boys to Division III title

The Littlestown boys' track and field team is back on top in YAIAA Division III.

After winning at least a share of four straight division titles from 2010 to 2013, the undefeated Bolts reclaimed the top spot with a win against previously-undefeated Bermudian Springs on a rainy Thursday afternoon. They left no doubt, in a 101-49 victory by taking the top spot in 13 of 18 events and winning all three relays in the de facto division championship meet.

"Relays were everything," Littlestown senior David Gebhart, who competed in the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter relays, said. "We said before the meet started, 'If we win all three relays, we win the meet.' We made good handoffs and our boys were strong enough to pull through."

The 3,200 relay team, which uses a golden baton because — as anchor Isaiah Sauvageau said — "gold is for champions," completed an undefeated season by running the event in 9 minutes, 23 seconds.

That run set the tone for a victory that capped off a season by the Bolts that even coach Corey Bittle didn't see coming three months ago.

"There were a lot of question marks," he said. "We knew we'd be strong in some areas, but as a team I'm not sure we knew we were going to be that strong. We had a couple new seniors that weren't in track the last year or two, that helped. Some of our younger kids came on."

In the clinching win, the same athletes who stepped up all season long helped make that difference. Michael Bittinger won the 3,200, Collin McNeal won the 200 and Wes Storey ran in the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay. Familiar names pitched in as well. Kyle Langrill won the 110 hurdles, Isaiah Sauvageau won the 800 and 1,600 and Jackson Hornbrook won the 400.

The Bolts won every track event, except for the 300 hurdles, in which Langrill fell behind in a close race after hitting his foot on a hurdle and falling. In the field events, which Bermudian Springs figured to dominate, Littlestown pulled off three first places.

"Our kids have been working hard in practice, our coaches have been coaching," Bittle said. "There's a lot of times we don't get out of here until 5:30 or so, even though practice ends at five."

That extra effort paid off as Littlestown sent its senior class out with three division titles in four years, and it celebrated with senior day festivities as a light drizzle turned into a downpour.

"This title's so important for us, we've been working all year to get to this point," Langrill, a senior, said. "This whole week has just been mental and physical preparation for this meet, and everyone put in the best work they could today.

"We wanted to come back and regain what is ours."
