Bermudian Springs boys make statement win against defending champion Biglerville

Coming into Tuesday's meet, nobody was sure what to make of the Bermudian Springs boys track and field team.

A 125-25 win against a young, inexperienced Hanover team on March 24 didn't shine much light of what the Eagles are capable of, and bad weather kept them from competing since then.

Would they still be a middle-of-the-road YAIAA DIvision III team like they were last season when they went 3-2? Or would they be a contender for the division title?

Tuesday's meet against defending division champion Biglerville provided a resounding answer to that question. With a 90-60 win, Bermudian Springs proved that it's undoubtedly a contender for the division title, and might even be the favorite.

The Eagles won 11 of the 18 boys events and widened the margin by taking two of the top three spots in 10 of the 15 non-relay events.

"We try to get a lot of one-twos, but if we can't get that we go for one-threes," said junior Dylan Lott, who placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles, and contributed to the winning 400 relay. "If you're not gonna win, at least make sure you get points. All points matter."

Freshman Chad Long announced his presence and scored major points by winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 and senior Colton Dull made a statement by beating Ben Hurda in the javelin and winning the triple jump and long jump, an event he just started practicing this week.

"We're pretty solid all the way around," Bermudian Springs coach Chris King said. "It's a good group. We knew last year, we lost three pretty close meets last year that could've been a big difference in our season. We knew we had most of those kids back."

Patrick Scollon won the 200 and the 400, Ryan Markle won the high jump and Dustin Lauver won the discus. But the biggest difference came from athletes like Lott and Trevor Grim who supplemented those first-place efforts with second- and third-place points. Grim placed second behind Biglerville senior Danny Stoner in both hurdle events.

"It's real important," King said. "In some of these meets last year we didn't get those and now we got those this year at this meet. This is only our second meet, it's early yet, but that's good. Especially against (Biglerville) which we knew was gonna be a fairly close meet."

With that win, Bermudian Springs (2-0) and Littlestown (2-0) are the only undefeated teams left in Division III. The division championship may be decided on April 30, when the two teams will meet in a rescheduling of a dual originally planned for last week.

For the Canners, Stoner won the pole vault, 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles. As rain drizzled down towards the end of the meet, his whole team and many from Bermudian Springs walked over to the pole vault pit to watch him try to break the school record, but three attempts at a leap of 14 feet, seven inches fell short.

On the girls side, Bermudian Springs competed the sweep with a 102-48 win. Gabby Emeigh won the shot put, javelin and discus and Lindsey Brehm won the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles and placed third in the 100 meter dash.
