Gettysburg breaks out against West York in 2nd half

Gettysburg's boys' soccer team broke open a tie game in the second half, netting a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart to defeat West York, 2-0, in YAIAA Division II action Tuesday night.

Warriors striker Matt Yingling went down late in the first half after having the wind knocked out of him, but he returned to start the second half and he began Gettysburg's barrage of shots on goal. His first shot, less than two minutes into the half, was denied by Bulldogs keeper Cameron Goodling to keep the match even.

But the Warriors broke the scoreless deadlock at the 36:15 mark when Logan Carbaugh, a freshman defender, headed in Drew Wivell's corner kick.

"Drew played me a perfect cross, and it was unbelievable to get my first goal off of a header," Carbaugh said. "I feel extraordinarily good right now to be able to score and help the team win."

Cade Wilhelm found Yingling, who doubled the lead just 22 seconds later when he blasted a shot off of Goodling as he charged off his line. Goodling was able to slow the ball down, but the ball reached the right side of the net for Yingling's eighth score of the season.

"As soon as Drew won the ball, I took off," Yingling said. "I was hoping that Cade would give me the ball and he played me a good one."

Gettysburg (4-1-1, 3-1 Division II) defeated West York, 3-0, when the schools met just three days earlier.

"We were chasing it once they scored. I'm pleased with my boys that we kept fighting even after falling down by two goals," West York head coach Brent Duffy said. "You like to face tough teams and be challenged, and these guys are very good."

Even though both of Gettysburg's goals, and 10 of 11 shots, came in the second half, Gettysburg head coach Scott Hancock was more pleased with the first half that his side played.

"We had opportunities in the first half but didn't have anything to show for it, despite being patient and setting ourselves up," Hancock said. "In the second half, things opened up more for us when they pushed another guy forward."

Hancock has now won 125 matches as the boys' head coach. He has won 160 at the school, including his four seasons as the girls' head coach.
