York Catholic grabs statement win at Susky

In an early-season girls' lacrosse matchup that pitted two of the YAIAA's top contenders and strongest defenses against each other, it was Amanda Tufano and York Catholic who came away with a statement win.

Tufano scored three straight goals in less than three minutes midway through the second half that extended a 5-3 Irish lead to 8-3, essentially sealing the win despite a late rally by the Warriors.

Maddie Ellis, Rachel Marshner and Riley Roeder each scored two goals for the Warriors, who struggled to clear the ball and spent the majority of the game defending in their own zone.

"Our big thing at York Catholic is 'under eight,'" York Catholic defender Maura Palandro said. "We like to keep our opponents under eight goals. And so we communicate, guard their cutters and work as a team to do that."

Sarah Mazzur and Lisa Casagrande each scored two goals and Anna Linthicum added a goal and two assists for York Catholic.

"I'm happy we put up 10 knowing how good their defense is (Susquehannock) and how we struggled to get points against them last year," York Catholic head coach Rob Linthicum said. "All the preseason polls had these teams either 1-2 or 1-3 in the league so I think everyone knew. It was obviously a big game in the YAIAA and probably a precursor of some kind of postseason game. So yeah, it was a big statement."
