Spring Grove's second-round PIAA tournament game has been postponed for a second time because of this week's winter storm.

The Rockets will now play East Stroudsburg North at 7 p.m. Friday at Pottsville's Martz Hall in the second round of the PIAA Class 5A boys' basketball tournament.

The entire second of the basketball tournaments had already been pushed from Tuesday and Wednesday to Thursday because of winter storm Stella. Parts of northeast Pennsylvania received 2 feet of snow, leaving some teams unable to travel to their second-round games.

The Spring Grove game is one of just two in District 3 that needed to be rescheduled as snow cleanup efforts continue. The other is in the girls' Class 4A bracket, where Bishop McDevitt will now play Montoursville at 7 p.m. Friday at Shamokin Area High School.

The change also has repercussions for the quarterfinal schedule. Teams that win Friday would then play quarterfinals on Sunday, instead of Saturday, according to District 3 basketball chairman Dave Bitting, in a tweet from District 3.

So Sunday will feature these two games:

  • Spring Grove boys vs. East Stroudsburg North winner vs. the winner of Thursday's Mechanicsburg vs. Archbishop Wood game.
  • McDevitt girls vs. Montoursville winner vs. the winner of Thursday's Lancaster Catholic vs. Forest Hills game.

It's a rare move for PIAA events to be held on a Sunday. The final day of the PIAA swimming championships will also be held this Sunday, and the Class 3A diving championships will be held next Sunday after the entire swimming and diving championships schedule was altered by the snowstorm.

A potential Spring Grove quarterfinal on Sunday would likely conflict with the YAIAA senior all-star gamesm set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at West York.
