York Country Day earns spot in title game

NEFFSVILLE - With 2:43 to play in Monday's District 3 Class A boys' basketball semifinal between York Country Day and Lancaster County Christian, the Lions had just 26 points.

York Country Day's DeAireus Brown had 27 himself for the entire game.

It was that kind of night for the top-seeded Greyhounds, who led the entire game, in a 60-32 dominating victory at Manheim Township High School.

"That's a heck of a team and to beat them by 30, I never would've guessed that," Greyhounds head coach Corey Stiles said. "I was thinking more of a 10-point game."

York Country Day (21-0) takes its undefeated streak to Giant Center on Friday for a 5 p.m. district title showdown against No. 10 Greenwood. It will be the first title game appearance for the Greyhounds since a 2002 loss to Scotland.

"The whole season that's been our main goal is to get to the Giant Center," Brown said. "Since Day 1, that was our first goal, and our second goal was to get to states."

Following Friday's quarterfinal round win, the Greyhounds knew that they had to improve their first-quarter performance in order to keep advancing in the postseason.

"We made an emphasis at practice," Stiles said. "We know if we play like that for four quarters, we are tough to beat. We came out and contested and made them shoot tough shots, and we got out in transition and got layups."

In Monday's first quarter, Country Day scored 17 points and limited the Lions to five points and forced eight turnovers.

"That wasn't a surprise to us. We had been working on it," Brown said.

By halftime, the Greyhounds led 34-13.

Brown finished with 27 points and seven rebounds. The junior has easily transitioned into the Greyhounds offense after playing for Northeastern last season.

"I feel like I'm more free with what I can do," Brown said. "I can play my game. I just have a lot more fun."

Jordan Ray finished with 15 points, and DJ Hamilton added 11 points for the Greyhounds.

Country Day out rebounded the fourth-seeded Lancaster County Christian, 28-10, and held the Lions to single digits in three of the four quarters.

The Lions (17-8) were led by Eli Cosme's eight points.
