Eastern York out-hustles Gettysburg

The Warriors hit just four field goals in the first half

Gettysburg head coach Jeff Bair didn't know what to say.

The Warriors had just lost to Eastern York, 59-33, on the road Friday, and Bair couldn't pinpoint one specific thing that hurt his team against the Golden Knights.

According to Bair, the Warriors simply weren't prepared to play basketball.

"They were very well-prepared, and I'm not sure we showed up at all," Bair said. "We weren't nervous, just weren't ready to play. If our effort isn't there against good teams, that's going to be the result."

The loss came four weeks after the Warriors (9-4, 4-4 DII) dropped a much closer contest, 52-44, to the Golden Knights (8-3, 5-2 DII). But after scoring the game's first four points Friday, Gettysburg looked overmatched and at times lost.

It didn't help that Gettysburg's shots weren't falling. After hitting nine 3-pointers the last time the two teams played, the Warriors hit just one Friday and made only eight field goals overall. Star guard Marquise Camel struggled in particular, finishing with just two points.

But the Warriors shooting woes didn't bother Bair as much as their defense did. The Golden Knights scored 17 straight points in the first half and registered a number of offensive rebounds and layups.

"We didn't shoot well but shooting comes and goes, and our effort just wasn't there," Bair said. "They were aggressive on the boards and wanted loose balls and wanted things more than we did."

Eastern York head coach Jon Reichard was just as surprised as Bair at how lopsided the score was. Reichard even admitted that he was worried it wasn't his team's night when they went the game's first 3:30 without making a shot and fell behind 4-0.

Reichard also credited his team's defense for taking the Warriors out of their comfort zone by guarding them tightly around the perimeter. The Golden Knights almost held Gettysburg under 30 points until the Warriors hit a few foul shots late in the game with both team's substitutes in.

"I didn't think we'd get off to that good of a start, and the first couple minutes I was worried we weren't going to get off to any start," Reichard said. "Once they settled in, we played really well. Our defense is better than people give us credit for. As far as field-goal defense, we played pretty well defensively."

With Gettysburg down by 16 at halftime, Bair stressed to his players how much more aggressive the Golden Knights were being. While the Warriors did score the opening points of the third quarter, they couldn't capitalize and went into the fourth down by 27.

Now at .500 in Division II play, Bair said his players need to be motivated by Friday's loss or things won't get much better moving forward.

"I thought we had a chance to make a run, but they're very solid, and they're not the kind of team you make that run on," Bair said. "If it's not a wake-up call then we're in big trouble."
