West York falls into deep funk, loses to Dover

Flummoxed may have been the best word to describe West York head coach Bill Ackerman on Tuesday night.

His Bulldogs had just shot under 30 percent from the floor and failed to score more than 40 points for a second-straight outing, resulting in a 62-40 blowout loss at Dover. And Ackerman was left scratching his head, he said.

"This might be the first time in my coaching career that I don't know what's going on," Ackerman said, as his team fell to 3-2 on the season. "This is baffling to me. This is even 180 degrees from just two weeks ago...We turned them over 24 times and only had 12, and we lost by 20."

Everything seemed to go Dover's way right from the start. The Eagles (4-2) shot 12-for-17 in the first half, Brady Bowman scored eight points in the first two minutes and Dover led 17-2 midway through the first quarter. An irritated Ackerman benched his entire starting lineup at that point.

"I really don't have the answers and I guess the only kids who do are the ones in the locker room right now," Ackerman said. "The seniors are going to have to come up with some answers."

Darian McCauley and Josh Bailey combined for 13 second-quarter points including a Bailey trey at the buzzer to cut Dover's lead from 26-8 to 32-22 before half.

But the Bulldogs' shooting woes worsened when they shot 2-for-14 in the third quarter and Dover pulled away. By the time the dust had settled, four Eagles — Bowman, Najah Fink, Jerry O'Neal and freshman Keith Davis — were in double figures and the Dover student section was telling West York to warm up the buses with four minutes left to play.

"Our guys just came to play tonight," Dover head coach Brian Schmoyer said. "They followed the game plan and scouting report, and did a good job of taking it to another level...We're pretty balanced this year. Last year we had Ryan Beck, but this year we're replacing that with scoring by committee."
