Gettysburg puts away York Suburban in fourth

York Suburban turned a 19-point halftime deficit into a one-point lead heading for the fourth quarter, but the Trojans couldn't hold on after the wild rally and Gettysburg walked away with a 76-70 victory in the YAIAA Division III opener for both teams in boys' basketball action Tuesday night at Gettysburg.

Suburban (1-2, 0-1 YAIAA II) trailed 39-20 at intermission, but made 11-of-14 from the field, including 8-of-8 from beyond the arc, in the third quarter to hang 30 points on the board.

A Donovan Mears floater along the right baseline at the quarter horn gave the visitors a 50-49 advantage heading for the final stanza. That bucket completed a monster quarter for Mears as he pocketed 14 points in the frame.

"Suburban was cold in the first half, but I knew that they could shoot," Gettysburg head coach Jeff Bair said. "We kept telling our guys that they had to guard them, and we guarded them pretty well. They hit some really tough shots."

Gettysburg (3-0, 1-0) grabbed the lead to start the fourth quarter when Max Lampe connected for a 3-pointer from the right corner a mere 12 seconds into the stanza. That started a frame that saw four lead changes and five ties.

Mears broke a 59-59 tie with back-to-back buckets midway through the fourth quarter, and he finished with 30 points on the night.

But the Warriors responded. Down 65-63, Marquise Camel buried a trifecta and was fouled with 2:15 to play. The senior guard knocked down the free throw to give Gettysburg a 67-65 advantage, and it was the second four-point play of the young season for Camel, who won the Warriors' opener with a four-point play in the final seconds of their win against Shippensburg on Friday.

Suburban closed the gap to 71-70 on Chey Carter's bucket with 40 seconds to go, but the Warriors were able to salt the game away with five free throws in the final 32 ticks.

"This is going to be a tough division night in and night out," Bair said. "There aren't going to be many easy nights, and we're happy to get the win tonight."

Camel and Lampe each established new career highs in pacing the Warriors with 26 points apiece, while Ravaughn Dillard chipped in with 12 points, six boards and four assists.

The Warriors started the night well, opening up an eight-point advantage halfway through the opening frame and led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The advantage stood at 25-18 before a 14-0 spurt by the hosts gave them their largest lead of the night, 39-18. Camel and Lampe keyed the run with six points each.

Suburban made 19-of-29 (66 percent) of its shots in the second half and finished the game 26-of-52 from the field.
