Gettysburg shuts down Cedar Cliff's Ford

A night after Cedar Cliff's Derek Ford scorched New Oxford for 30 points, Gettysburg's Connor Weikert held the Colts star senior to just eight points Saturday in helping the Warriors win the GWABC Tip-Off tournament. Gettysburg earned a 52-33 victory in the championship game at home.

Ford shot just 3-of-20 from the field, including 0-for-7 from the beyond the arc. He missed three of the five free throws that he attempted.

"Their other kids refused to take open shots when they had them, and we hoped that would be the case," Gettysburg head coach Jeff Bair said. "That allowed Connor to go to work, and he did a great job all night long."

Gettysburg (2-0) trailed in the early going, but Max Lampe buried a 3-pointer at the 6:04 mark of the opening stanza to give the Warriors a lead that they never relinquished.

The hosts held a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. The Colts drew within 22-18 on Mark Shultz's hoop with 3:48 left in the first half, but the Warriors pitched a shutout for the rest of the frame. Meanwhile, Weikert buried a pair of 3s to give Gettysburg a 28-18 lead at the half.

A slow-paced third quarter saw Gettysburg holding a 36-23 edge heading for the fourth quarter.

Ravaughn Dillard started the fourth quarter with a bang for Gettysburg when he drove the lane for a one-handed tomahawk slam 20 seconds into the frame that pushed the lead to 38-23.

"They didn't have a big guy to clog the lane," Bair said. "It allowed us to drive to the basket and do well on the glass."

Cedar Cliff (1-1) closed the gap to 12 in the fourth quarter at 39-27, but Gettysburg ripped off a 10-1 run that put the game out of reach.

Lampe put in 20 points to earn the MVP award, while Dillard had seven points and 12 rebounds to take home the Hustle Award.

In the consolation contest, New Oxford couldn't hold an eight-point third quarter lead and fell to Shippensburg, 60-57.

New Oxford (0-2) led for most of the game until Ship's Shuntan Hickman hit an elbow jumper with 33 seconds left, giving the Greyhounds a 59-57 lead.

Ship (1-1) then split a pair of free throws with 10 seconds to go, and Wade Mills blocked Ben Lehman's attempt at a 3-point buzzer-beater that could've tied the game. Mills finished with 18 points and six boards to earn an All-Tournament nod, while Devon Duvall led the Colonials with 28 points and snagged an All-Tourney selection.
