Kennedy buckles down, pitches York Catholic past Biglerville

York Catholic's Brenden Kennedy failed to retire Biglerville in order in any inning, but the Irish righty scattered seven hits and led his team to a 3-0 victory in YAIAA Division IV baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Yost Field in Biglerville.

Kennedy struck out five and issued one free pass, throwing 96 pitches, 69 of them for strikes.

"He keeps it around the zone most of the time, and he threw a lot of strikes today," York Catholic head coach Joe Gurreri said. "It's big not to give up walks and make them earn their way on."

York Catholic (5-2, 5-1 Div. IV) had an excellent chance to get to Canner hurler Chase Long with one out in the top of the first when the Irish loaded the bases on an error, walk and infield single. But Long escaped the jam with a pop out and a strikeout.

In its half of the first, Biglerville received back-to-back two-out singles from Noah Ayers and Sean Redding, but they were stranded when Kennedy induced a groundout from Seth Re.

Dillon Hippensteel blasted a double to deep right field to lead off the third, advanced on C.J. Burnside's sac bunt and came home with the game's first run on Jake Krevetski's groundout.

Kennedy then helped his own cause in the fourth with a leadoff double. Courtesy runner Ryan DePorter touched the dish when Chandler Bankos reached on an error.

"We manufactured a couple runs today and made some really good defensive plays, as well," Gurreri said.

Jorden Trostel's one-out double in the fourth gave the hosts another chance to score, but a pair of flyouts doused that fire.

Krevetski's single to plate Burnside in the fifth bumped the advantage to 3-0, but Long averted further damage with a pair of strike outs.

Biglerville (4-7, 4-4) received a two-out double from Noah Ayers in the fifth, but he went no further. The Canners stranded two more runners in the sixth and another in the seventh. For the game, Biglerville left ten runners on, seven of them in scoring position.

"We didn't get the clutch hits today, but you have to credit their pitcher," Biglerville head coach Jeff Taylor said. "He was very good, and he buckled down when he had to."

Long was tough in defeat for the Canners as he went the distance on 115 pitches, 65 of them strikes. He allowed one earned run and four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

"Chase pitched great today, and we'll take that kind of pitching every game if we can get it," Taylor said. "If we get that kind of pitching every game, I like our chances to win games."

Biglerville returns to action today at York Suburban. Meanwhile, the Irish's next contest is a home game with Littlestown on Friday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
