Shultz, Romanoff power New Oxford past Bermudian Springs

On a windy afternoon in York Springs, New Oxford slapped together 13 hits in its 13-3, six-inning win over Bermudian Springs in non-division YAIAA baseball action Monday afternoon.

New Oxford (4-4) came out of the gate hot with two first-inning runs as Josh Shultz doubled home a run and Corban Czap reached on an error to plate another.

The Colonials hung four more runs in the second with run-scoring singles from Nathan Breighner, Keegan Romanoff and Ethan Hertz providing three of the scores.

Bermudian (3-3) got a run back in the third. Clayton Hoff beat out an infield single that scored Alex Tweardy, and Toby Sponseller walked to load the bases for Collin Weigle with two down. That prompted a mound visit from Colonial head coach Scott Anderson.

Shultz heeded his coach's advice, striking out Weigle to escape the jam.

"I don't think Josh ever really got comfortable out there on the mound," Anderson said. "This is a tough place to pitch. The win was blowing out, and the infield is fast."

After allowing a run in the third, the visitors answered with two runs in the top of fourth with a rally that started with Breighner's leadoff double. Zach Rudisill bunted him to third, and he came home on Romanoff's groundout. Then Alex Smith followed a pair of walks with a single to plate another run.

"We're starting to do the little things better," Anderson said. "Nathan led off with a double, a sac bunt moved him to third and then a groundout scored him. That doesn't sell newspapers, but it helps to win games."

The sixth inning saw New Oxford tack on five more runs. Jordan Shields boomed a two-run double to deep right-center, and Ethan Hertz added two-run single. Shultz blasted a double to plate Hertz.

The Eagles tried to avoid the mercy rule in the sixth when Hunter Rang singled in a run and Brady Myers plated another with a sac fly. But Shultz ended it by inducing a lineout and fly out.

Shultz went the distance on 99 pitches. He allowed three runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

The Colonial defense backed Shultz with a nice double play in each of the first two innings. Smith snared a line drive in the first to turn two in the first, and Hertz made a diving catch of a sinking liner in shallow center field in the second.

Romanoff collected three hits, scored three times and drove in two runs. Hertz, Shultz and Breighner each had two hits and scored two runs apiece.

Tweardy paced Bermudian's eight-hit attack with a pair of hits, including a double.

Both teams return to the diamond with division contests on the road on Tuesday. The Colonials play at Red Lion, while the Eagles travel to Eastern York for games slated to begin at 4:15 p.m.
