YAIAA cheerleaders advance to second day of states

Six YAIAA cheerleading squads made it through the first round of the PIAA competitive spirit championships on Friday, advancing to Saturday's final rounds at Hershey's Giant Center.

The teams that advanced are Central York, Dallastown, Dover, New Oxford, Red Lion and York Catholic.

District 3 champion Red Lion finished fifth in the co-ed division, sending the Lions straight into Saturday afternoon's state finals. The Lions finished fifth in the preliminary round with a score of 68.53. Red Lion was the highest-placing finisher among YAIAA qualifiers.

New Oxford also advanced in the co-ed division by placing 10th on Friday with a 54.30. The Colonials will compete against four other teams in Saturday morning's semifinals, and the top team from that group will reach the afternoon finals.

District 3 champion Dallastown and Dover, meanwhile, competed in the medium schools division. Dover just missed out on an automatic bid to the finals. The Eagles were sixth in their group in the prelims, and the top five get to skip the semis. Dover scored a 71.37 in prelims, 3.20 points out of fifth place.

Dallastown was seventh in the other preliminary round group with a 66.47 and will join Dover in the Saturday morning semifinals. In the medium schools division, the top two semifinalists will advance to the finals.

In the small schools division, Central York and York Catholic will compete in Saturday morning's semifinals, each vying for one of the last two spots in the finals. York Catholic took seventh in its preliminary group with a 59.83, while Central York was ninth in the other group with a 70.83 in prelims.

Only the top 10 finishers in each small school division group advanced two Saturday's competition. South Western was 15th with a 50.07, and Spring Grove was 17th in the same group with a 48.50.
