Successful girls' hoops coach named York Catholic AD

Kevin Bankos will take over as athletic director at York Catholic High School, the school announced in a news release Tuesday.

Bankos will remain as girls' basketball coach for the Irish as well, where he's led the team to unprecedented success, including six PIAA championship appearances and two state titles. York Catholic won 10 straight District 3 Class AA titles under Bankos' watch and reached its 11th straight final last year before falling to top-seeded Camp Hill.

"It's an exciting new opportunity," Bankos said. "I think the fact that I was given an opportunity (by York Catholic) is a wonderful chance to give back to the school."

Bankos will take over the full-time athletic director role for Rick Luckman, who will continue working in the York Catholic athletic department as emeritus athletic director, according to the York Catholic press release. Luckman is transitioning to retirement.

"One of the biggest things for me was that he (Luckman) would still be here, that's a comfort to me," Bankos said. "It's a great opportunity to learn under him and transition in with the help of his expertise. Not many guys have that privilege...The transition could last a few years. The beauty of York Catholic culture is it's very family-oriented so they're going to let him (Luckman) handle the transition how he sees fit. He gave so many years to the school, it's a credit for them to let him leave the way he wants to. He can take as long as he wants. I'm just excited to tap into his knowledge."

Bankos was also named dean of student affairs Tuesday, which he added is a chance to be a mentor to kids outside of athletics.

"As many coaches know, our job is more than just coaching, it's developing these kids into adults for the real world," Bankos said. "And the dean position provides the opportunity to do that."

"The commonality in Kevin's work is leading by example, positively motivating, and respecting organizational culture," York Catholic Principal Katie Seufert stated in the news release. "We look forward to having him on board in this expanded role."

As athletic director, Bankos will oversee 44 teams at York Catholic, manage scheduling and budgeting within the department and guide the coaching staff, according to the release. He begins his new job July 11.

Adding responsibility won't affect Bankos' position with the basketball team, he added.

"I may look at it in a few years and decide it's time to move on but I always re-evaluate after every season so that's no change," Bankos said. "After each season I evaluate if it's time to move on or stay and right now I think it's time to stay."
