Sanders, Hill commit to Drexel University

For Cameron Sanders and Spencer Hill, being able to play sports at an NCAA Division I school is a dream come true.

Sanders, a senior soccer goalie at York Country Day, and Hill, a senior swimmer at Dallastown, both signed their National Letters of Intent to continue their athletic careers at Drexel University.

Sanders said signing on to play at the Philadelphia school lifted a weight off his shoulders.

“I never really thought I’d be going to a school like Drexel,” Sanders said. “Like Division I. I just had the dream of playing college soccer, and here I am playing Division I at a great school. It was the most amazing feeling.”

The 6-foot-5 keeper played for the PA Classics Academy 97 team this season and was noticed by Drexel when they came to scout another player. The scout was impressed by Sanders during warmups and his play during the game, then came back to watch him again.

“They started talking to me and I went and visited (Drexel),” Sanders said. “It all just kind of clicked and it felt good. It seemed right.”

It came down to Drexel and Boston College for Hill. He started talking with Drexel over the summer and went for a visit to the campus at the beginning of the school year.

Ultimately Hill was swayed by the growth of the swimming program and the location of the school.

“I think Philly is an amazing city and it’s awesome that Drexel is in the middle of the city,” Hill said. “I don’t know if I would call it an up-and-coming (swim) program, but they’re definitely getting stronger. … I think they’re built up to be a great team and I think things are going to go really well for us.”

Hill plans to major in business finance in the fall, while Sanders is deciding between pre-physical therapy and pre-physician assistant.

Sanders and Hill are not the only York County athletes headed to the City of Brotherly Love for college. Dallastown soccer player Ali Shick signed her letter of intent to play for Drexel earlier in the year.

Shick is a friend of Hill, and he said he's looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the fall.

“It’s awesome because I’ll see them on campus and be friends with them,” Hill said. "It’s awesome that I’m going to have people that I know, but then I’m going to have a bunch of new friends. The new atmosphere is definitely going to be awesome.”
