Northern Lebanon to defend District 3 wrestling title

Northern Lebanon will have a target on its back for the District 3 Class 2A Team Championships when the dual meet wrestling tournament kicks off Wednesday.

The Vikings (15-2) are not the top seed in the event, but they are the defending champions and they have developed a reputation as one of the teams to beat.

NL, as the No. 4 seed, will open with a quarterfinal match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at No. 1 Bermudian Springs. The Vikes' opponent will be No. 5 seed Newport (13-4). At the same time, Bermudian (18-1) will take on No. 8 Delone Catholic (10-4).

The two winners will meet in a semifinal match immediately following the quarterfinals.

On Saturday at Milton Hershey, the match for third place and the championship will be held at 10:30 a.m. The top three teams qualify for the PIAA Team Championships.

Until Saturday night, Boiling Springs - which Northern Lebanon had defeated 39-25 last year in the district final - had been sitting at No. 5, but the Bubblers were edged 31-30 by Bermudian Springs and dropped to No. 6.

The Vikings had a dominating regular season. Their only defeats were to Central Dauphin, the No. 1 seed in 3A, and Hilton, N.Y., which is in the top 20 nationally (a loss that did not count in the district rankings). NL scored at least 60 points in 10 of 17 meets and shut out six opponents.
