Annville-Cleona beats Biglerville in back-and-forth, 2OT thriller

After four quarters, an hour lightning delay and two overtimes, Annville-Cleona's football team finally found a way to solve Biglerville late Friday night.

Matt Light kicked a field goal in the second overtime at Biglerville to give the Little Dutchmen a 39-36 win.

The visitors blocked a Biglerville field goal in the second overtime, setting up the final kick.

The teams traded scores in the first overtime with AC's Matt Langan and Biglerville's Dayne Showers each rushing for a touchdown.

The Little Dutchman forced overtime when Adam Fox scored on a 1-yard run with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The touchdown capped a 10-play drive highlighted by a contentious pass interference penalty against Biglerville.

The Canners had taken the lead at 29-22 with a little less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Dayne Showers went around right end for a 13-yard score. That was the second touchdown of the night for Showers, who finished with 116 yards on 16 carries.

That marked the first time that Biglerville had the lead during the game and brought the Canner faithful to their feet.

Annville-Cleona started quickly, scoring just two minutes into the first quarter. Alec Barr intercepted Ben Hurda, setting the stage for Fox's first touchdown.

The senior quarterback called his own number around left end but was stripped of the ball. Before the Biglerville defense could react, Fox picked up the ball and ran in for the score, covering 81 yards over the entire play. AC surprised Biglerville with a quick two-point conversion.

The Canners answered a little more than four minutes later. TJ Weaver scored from 9 yards out to cut the visiting team's lead. Hurda completed two important third-down conversions during the drive.

Fox struck again with 3:39 left in the first quarter, going around right and for a 45 yard scoring run.

Biglerville cut the lead to one point again after a Nate Newberry interception. Five plays later, Showers scored on a 1-yard run for his first TD of the game.

The Little Dutchmen went back ahead by eight in the third quarter when Fox stepped in front of a Hurda pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

But Biglerville would not go quietly. The Canners' line started to dominate the game and wear down the Little Dutchmen.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Hurda called his own number as he rolled out to the right on a fourth-down play. The senior went 8 yards for the score and then connected with Nick Bell on the conversion play to tie the score at 22.

The Canners held off Annville-Cleona on their next possession, setting up the Showers touchdown that put the home team ahead for a brief moment.
