Elco beats weather, L-S


The Elco girls basketball team picked up two wins on Friday - It beat the weather and Lampeter-Strasburg.

In a rare 4 p.m. tip-off to compensate for the winter storm arriving in the area, the Raiders picked up a 55-40 win over L-S in a Section Three clash in Myerstown.

Elco (11-6, 8-5 Section 3) led 12-8 after one quarter and 25-23 at the half, before outscoring L-S 30-17 after the break to win going away.

Ryelle Shuey led a balanced Elco effort with 13 points and Taylor Bossert added 12 points on four 3-point baskets. In all, seven different players scored for the Raiders in the win.

GIRLS

Palmyra 61, Red Land 48: In Palmyra, the Cougars  rode a 23-point outburst from Molly Gundermann to the double-digit win.

Josie Stovall added 16 points for Palmyra, which took control  of the contest by opening up a 30-16 halftime lead. Amelia Baldo chipped in with a dozen points for Palmyra, which improved to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Palmyra 68, Red Land 56: In Lewisberry, the Cougars needed extra time to put down the Patriots but dominated OT en route to the victory.

Isaac Blatt came up with a game-high 21 points in all, as well as a pair of dunks to highlight Palmyra's 21-point explosion in the extra session and help it improve to 14-4 overall and 7-4 in the Mid-Penn Keystone.

The Cougars jumped to a 31-21 halftime lead, only to be outscored 15-4 in the third on the way to an eventual overtime period. Braden Vernet added 15 points for Pete Conrad's club and Eric Lynn made it three Cougars in double figures with 13 points.
