Palmyra softball 4, Bishop McDevitt 2

After three straight losses to open the season, the Palmyra softball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, a 4-2 victory over Bishop McDevitt at Palmyra High School.

Senior centerfielder Kailey Werkheiser led the way, driving in Palmyra's first run with a triple, making a diving catch in center, throwing a runner out at the plate and plating another run in the fifth inning to aid the Cougar cause.

"After watching the team struggle hitting the ball the last few games, we moved Kailey up in the order to see if her senior experience would spark the offense," Palmyra coach Tod Whitman reported. "She not only sparked it, she set it ablaze!

"She's been incredibly unselfish and helpful with our team - taking on whatever role is asked of her. Today, she took the bull by the horns and kickstarted this team into the win column."

Kayla Bonawitz added three runs scored as Palmyra improved to 1-3 overall and in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division, and Abbey Krahling scattered six hits on the mound to pick up the win.

Cole Blatt, Elco baseball

Making his season debut on the mound, Blatt tossed a complete-game shutout and hit three singles in a 5-0 win over Manheim Central.The Raiders (1-1, 1-0 Section Three) beat the Barons for the first time since 2013. Blatt allowed only four hits and struck out five.

In addition to Blatt's efforts, Raiders catcher Cole Miller went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored twice. Cody Good also knocked in a pair of runs. Elco plated three runs in the first and finished with 10 hits total.

Palmyra 11, Bishop McDevitt 4

The Cougars' offense woke up in a big way after scoring only two runs at Mechanicsburg over the weekend, as seven players recorded a hit against the Crusaders. Amid his complete-game on the mound, Isaac Blatt went 2-for-5 with three runs and a double. Zach Yingst picked up three RBIs, and Brandon Charochak notched two hits and an RBI.

Annville-Cleona 2, Lancaster Mennonite 0

Eli Setlock had his no-hitter broken up with one out to go in a strong Section Four opener for the Little Dutchmen. Setlock and Alec Barr each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Annville-Cleona moved to 3-0 on the season and hosts Lebanon Catholic on Wednesday.

Softball

Hempfield 8, Cedar Crest 0

In South Lebanon, the Falcons opened Section One play with a shutout loss and were outhit 15-5 in the process.

Anna Debellis had two hits in a losing cause for Cedar Crest, but it wasn't enough to dent the armor of Hempfield ace Lauren Lichtenwalner, who tossed the complete game shutout.

Manheim Central 12, Elco 3

In Manheim, the Raiders got the jump with a three-run top of the first, but it was all Barons from there, as they scored in every inning but the first en route to the lopsided win.

Amaya Phillips drove in two of the runs for Elco, which was outhit 15-6.

Lamepter-Strasburg 11, Northern Lebanon 0 (5 innings)

In Fredericksburg, the Vikings were no match for Jordan Weaver and the Pioneers, who ended the contest after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Weaver struck out 12 in the abbreviated shutout and allowed just one hit - a single off the bat of Jess Kreiser. The Vikings didn't help their cause defensively, committing seven errors.

Garden Spot 12, Lebanon 0 (5 innings)

At Stoever's Dam, Taylor Martin tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the Spartans blanked Lebanon in a contest shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Martin struck out nine and did not walk a batter en route to accomplishing the no-hot feat.

Boys tennis

Elco 7, Northern Lebanon 0 

The Raiders made short work of their county rival, sweeping to victory and losing just six total games in the process.

Mason Bennetch, Linden Bennetch, Dylan Spitler and Christian Stahl all notched singles wins for the Raiders, now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Section Two.

Manheim Central 6, Annville-Cleona 1

A-C had a rough time in its Section Two battle with the Barons, managing only Santi Paris' three-set win at No.4 singles.

The loss left A-C 6-3 overall, and 3-2 in Section Two.

Boys track

Lebanon 106, Garden Spot 44

The Cedars breezed by the visiting Spartans with a dominant showing in the field events. Juan Maldanado set a school record in the triple jump, leaping 44-7 3/4.

Milton Hershey 120, Palmyra 30

Girls track

Garden Spot 99, Lebanon 49

Maddy Hartman took first place in the long and triple jump on a overall tough afternoon for the Cedars. Ary'Anna Ortalaza won both the javelin and shot put with throws of 83-11 and 30-4 1/2, respectively.

Boys volleyball

Warwick 3, Cedar Crest 0

Zabby Sharifi's five kills led all Falcons in a home 17-25, 10-25, 14-25 sweep at the hands of the Warriors. Mark Johns nailed down three aces for Cedar Crest

Elizabethtown 3, Lebanon 1

The Cedars took the opener, 25-13, but dropped the remaining sets in order during a home loss. Lebanon's Rene Cortes posted 13 blocks.
