Franklin County sends 5 wrestlers to states

HERSHEY - That phrase "the agony and the ecstasy" plays out in real-time drama every year about this time on the floor of the Hersheypark Arena.

It did again for Franklin County wrestlers at the District 3 Class AAA Championships on Saturday.

On the ecstasy side you will find Shippensburg junior Cameron Tinner, who bulldozed his way through the field at 220 for a gold medal, capturing a 10-2 major decision in the final over Hershey's J'Michael Wedderburn. And that was Tinner's "closest" match, by far.

On a lower level, Chambersburg's Drew Peck and Ship's Chandler Olson came up just a little short against extremely strong opponents in the finals. But their good vibes came in the semifinals, when they each earned their 100th career victory as juniors.

At the next step, see Chambersburg's Aaron Rump, who separated a shoulder in his bout for third place, and Garrett Kyner, who lost not one, but two tiebreaker bouts Saturday - one in ultimate tiebreaker, one in the second period - and managed to take fifth.

Then there were the Runshaw brothers for the Trojans, who can commiserate with each other on a pair of devastating losses in fifth-place bouts that kept them out of states. Seth (106 pounds) lost in sudden victory when he was called for an illegal scissors after losing a 4-1 lead in the third period. Spencer (113) had a comfortable 5-0 lead until he suffered a defensive pin with 21 seconds left.

"We got three into states, and we had five medal, but we did have some losses that will sting," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. "I'm hoping they can be motivational for them."

Tinner completed his mauling of the 220 weight class with a 15-0 tech fall in just 2:16 in the semifinals, then the major in the finals. It was almost surprising that he gave up two points on a takedown to Wedderburn, even if it was simply making sure he didn't get thrown.

"Coach said something to me about that during a break," Tinner said. "We had seen he liked to toss guys, so I just stayed low. We also knew he liked to sit at times, so we wanted to push the pace."

Leading 4-0, Tinner forced a stalling warning on Wedderburn with 11 seconds left in the first period. Tinner had two takedowns, a tilt and a reversal.

Greyhound coach Tony Yaniello said, "He really didn't have a close match this week, but he will at states."

Ship teammate Olson, a defending champion, ran into unbeaten Tyshawn White of Central Dauphin in the 126 final. White set the tone early when he snatched a single and turned it into a cradle for a 4-0 lead.

Olson said: “It’s tough when you have to come from behind against a guy like that in a big match. I think at the beginning I wasn’t wrestling my match; it was more about countering. Toward the end I was wrestling more my style. I guess I had a wakeup call.”

Peck took on Josh Colello of Cedar Cliff, also a defending champion. Colello, a North Carolina recruit, took an 8-4 victory for the 150th win of his career.

"I wasn't all in with my shots," Peck said. "When I had a good shot, I got (a takedown), but the other ones weren't good. I think I can beat him, but I have to wrestle my match."

Peck got a first-period takedown with seven seconds left and still led 4-2 in the second when Colello got in deep. Peck tried to keep scrambling, and, in addition to a takedown, Colello also scored back points for a 6-4 lead.

Mentzer said, "Drew had some opportunities, but that kid is a Division I recruit and those guys don't make many mistakes."

Rump fought his way into the third-place bout with a 5-2 tiebreaker win over Gabe Ikeda of Cedar Cliff, with a nearfall from the top in a rideout situation, and a 1-0 win over Michael Bracey of Kennard-Dale. But against Aaron Wildonger of Twin Valley, he injured his shoulder early.

“I felt it go out, then I looked and it was totally out," Rump said. "It’s been bothering me most of the weekend, but I thought I could get through it (after they popped it back in place).”

In a semifinal bout against Micah Hoffman of Northern York, Kyner went to the ultimate tiebreaker and had the choice. He had just ridden Hoffman for 30 seconds, but he chose down. And Hoffman held him there.

“When he took that injury timeout (with 0:05 left), we talked about what to do (for the final period)," Kyner said. "He was getting to his feet most of the time and we were worried I might get hit with stalling. Plus, I’m usually pretty good off bottom.”

A similar scenario came in the consy semis, when Kyner was tied 1-1 with Will Kaldes of Cumberland Valley in the second rideout. Kyner was 15 seconds from forcing the ultimate tiebreaker when he was called for stalling for hanging onto the ankles, and lost a point.
