CV holds off Chambersburg in wrestling

NEW KINGSTOWN - Cumberland Valley's strength in the middle weights proved to be too much for Chambersburg to handle Wednesday night.

The Trojans got off to a good start against the Eagles, but CV won six of seven bouts from 126 to 170 pounds to wrap up the victory.

"I thought the kids competed hard," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said, "even in a couple of matches where we were physically out-manned, the kids worked hard. We got a couple of breaks. We won the coin flip and set up some matchups in our favor, but we left some bonus points out there and didn't win a couple matches that we had to."

Two of the best from each team squared off at 132 and 138 and Mentzer figured he had to win both for the Trojans to have a shot. They got one.

At 138, Garrett Kyner caught the Eagles' Will Kaldes with a counter worth a takedown and three nearfall points toward the end of the first period to take a 5-0 advantage on his way to a 7-3 decision.

Mentzer said, "From then on he just wrestled smart and stayed out of trouble."

But at 132, Wyatt Long of Cumberland Valley (3-0, 2-0 MPC) rolled up a 9-1 major decision over Aaron Rump. Long defeated Rump 4-1 for third place in the Beast of the East Tournament on Sunday.

"Long is wrestling really well," Mentzer said. "He could go a long way in the postseason."

The Trojans opened with a pin at 195 by Greg Wallace and Dalton Grace then scored a 7-3 decision for a 9-0 lead. The Eagles held a 15-12 lead after a 9-1 major decision for Spencer Runshaw at 120 closed the gap. Chambersburg's other victory came in the final bout when Drew Peck pinned his man in 2:38.

Chambersburg is now 0-3 after wrestling the top three teams in the Commonwealth Division right off the bat.
