WRESTLING: Chambersburg falls to Mifflin County
LEWISTOWN -- The Chambersburg wrestling team came up short against Mifflin County in its first Mid Penn Commonwealth match of the year on Thursday night.
"Mifflin County is a tough team. We gave up too many bonus points and we didn't get enough bonus points from the kids who won their bouts," Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said.
The Trojans had one pin -- freshman Spencer Runshaw made his debut with a pin in 2:25 over Joey Taptich at 113. Drew Peck (195) scored an 11-3 major decision over Brandon Wilson and Aaron Rump won by forfeit at 132.
One other Chambersburg freshman earned a decision. Cole Grove (126) picked up a 3-1 win over Kyle Smith. The other two Trojan winners were at 138, where Garrett Kyner won a 5-2 decision over Jonah Kile, and 145, where Drake Brenize won 5-2 over Brandon Fultz.
At 220, Brock Over made his varsity debut against the No. 18-ranked wrestler in the country, Trey Hartsock, who pinned Over in 24 seconds. Jesse Kaiser also had his first varsity appearance and battled a top-20 wrestler in Trent Hidlay at 160 pounds, and was pinned in 1:15.
Dalton Grace was bumped up to heavyweight for the Trojans (0-1, 0-1 MPC) and wrestled Gavin Erb, at 285. Even though his opponent outweighed him by more than 80 pounds, Grace took the bout into overtime, but lost a 4-3 decision.
Mentzer said, "The kids competed hard. We just have to keep the young kids improving and capitalize on some things we did have."
The Huskies won eight of the 14 bouts, five by pin and two by forfeit.
