Franklin County athletes were all over the podium at Shippensburg University during Day 1 of the District 3 track & field championships, with a pair of gold medals highlighting the first day of competition.

Six total track & field athletes around Franklin County were awarded medals on Friday.

Area throwers swept the 3A shot put as Greencastle-Antrim's Jenay Faulkner won the girls, followed by a trip to the top of the medal stand for Chambersburg's Kelton Chastulik.

Along with Faulkner's triumphs, G-A won a pair of bronze medals. Campbell Parker placed third in the shot put with a throw of 55-0.25 - his best of the season by two feet. While Greencastle freshman Taryn Parks placed third in the girls 3200 with a time of 10:45.90.

Parks battled back from fifth place to take third in her first of three races this weekend.

"I was just really nervous going out and I wasn't sure if I would perform very well," Parks said. "I'm not used to this heat at all, we really haven't had any warm days this season but I'm hoping to come back on Saturday with wins in the 800 and the mile to improve off this performance."

Parks is seeded first in the girls 800 and second in the 1600, but hopes that competing in the 3200 will not keep her from quality times on Saturday.

"I think it will help (running today and tomorrow), but it might negatively impact my legs and how I feel tomorrow," Parks said. "My only other two mile before this I was really sore after, so I really need to take the precautions to prevent being sore (on Saturday)."

Jocelyn Kibbe, also of Chambersburg cleared 10-6 in the girls pole vault to capture fifth place.

Greencastle's Darius Carter and Chambersburg's Trayton Barnette made it to the semifinals of the boys 3A 110, but just missed the cutoff to the finals Saturday afternoon. Secret Shaffer of Chambersburg missed the semifinal cutoff in the 100 meter dash by two tenths of a second.
