F-F Highlights: Ship upsets Cumberland Valley

After starting the year 2-6, the Shippensburg baseball team needed something to turn things around in the second half of the season.

Monday’s 5-4 upset over Cumberland Valley could have been just what the doctor ordered.

After Ship racked up a 5-0 lead midway through the non-league matchup, the Eagles battled back, and brought the score within one in the top of the seventh.

But with runners on first and second, Bailey Custer dialed in to register the final strikeout.

“It was an opportunity for Bailey to come in and he did an outstanding job,” Shippensburg coach Nate Roseberry said. “He likes the pressure and he just takes a deep breath and starts throwing strikes.”

Aaron Ross had three hits for the Greyhounds, while Colton Zeigler and Nate Holt each brought in two runs.

“It’s a really big win for us to hopefully give us some momentum for the rest of the week,” Rosenberry said. “We executed well in multiple situations and we did the little things and put the ball in play.”

Zach Barnhart earned the win, pitching 5 1/3 innings, and Custer got the save.

WALK-OFF: The McConnellsburg baseball team ended a tough three-game losing skid in dramatic fashion with a walk-off win over SHL/ICC rival Tussey Mountain.

The Spartans loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Brice Feagley stepped up to the plate. Feagley hit a line drive to left for a single to score Cale Harmon with the game-winning run.

Matt Huston pitched six solid innings for the Spartans, striking out seven batters, and Trey Swope had two RBIs.

• James Buchanan’s Grace Amsley was the nail in Big Spring’s coffin Monday after she punched in a pair of runs in the fifth inning to lock in a 10-6 Mid Penn Colonial Division win over the Bulldogs. After Big Spring tied the game in the fourth, the Rockets responded the next inning by scoring four runs. Amsley led with three RBIs, while Cara Bender and Alyssa Blair each had two hits and an RBI.
• Although Fannett-Metal fell 8-5 to Chestnut Ridge, Emily Metcalfe was 3-for-3 with a home run and scored three times.

Track & field

• Southern Fulton’s Olivia Mottern won the girls javelin in a tri-meet with Tussey Mountain and Chestnut Ridge with a throw of 103-10, beating the field by nearly 20 feet.
• Chase Varner was a four-time winner for Southern Fulton during a tri-meet with Tussey Mountain and Chestnut Ridge, winning the 800, 400 and aiding two winning relays in the SF sweep.
• McConnellsburg's McKenzie Gelvin branched out in her events and still won 4 times in a quad meet win. She won the 100, 300 hurdles, 3200 and long jump.
• Chance Hawbaker (100, 200, high jump and 4x400 relay) helped McConnellsburg crush three other teams in a quad meet with 4 wins.
