See the top five plays as the Cougars held off the Trojans 16-15 Thursday.

Despite being down by four goals with less than nine minutes to go, Chambersburg's girls lacrosse team fought tooth and nail in a Mid Penn Conference game against Palmyra on Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans pulled within one on an Avery Rife goal with 4:43 remaining, but they had to settle for a 16-15 loss.

"They played great defense and also played great offense," Chambersburg coach Jamie Odell said. "They were really looking for the ball, working more as a team, and it's all coming together. This is our second game, and they've done 10 times better than the first scrimmage. I'm really excited about the next games."

Rife, Rachel Dusman, Hannah Raines and Cameron Stouffer all had hat tricks for the Trojans (0-2, 0-2 MPC), while Makenzie Miller added two scores and Courtney Kirby netted one.

The loss was a vast improvement over Monday night's season-opening loss to Carlisle, 15-6.

"They're building their confidence," Odell said. "It wasn't where it needed to be, and now it's coming along. I think that will just catapult them to the next level, and they're going to really see what their capabilities are."

Righting the ship

Waynesboro's softball team finally got on the winning side of things with an 11-0, five-inning victory over Spring Grove in a non-league game.

Katie Wise had a fine night from the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs. Abby Ebersole, Alexis Rosenberry, Jenna Powell, Sara Gsell and Mac Miller all had two hits apiece, as the Maidens (1-2) totaled 16.

"We played great today," Boro coach Aaron Burke said. "Every aspect of the game, we did well against a good Spring Grove team. (Pitcher) Caitlyn (Pollock) came right back from her Chambersburg game and was on. We loved the early challenge with facing quality teams, as it has made us work to get better."
