F-F Highlights: Forbes Road starts strong

Forbes Road got its baseball season started on a good note Friday by shutting out Fannett-Metal 3-0 in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

Brycen Hohman pitched the first four innings for the Cardinals, and Matt Brown entered to hold the Tigers down over the final three innings.

For F-M, Cole Funk suffered the loss.

Forbes Road coach Randy Gelvin said, "Funk pitched really well for them. He's a pretty good pitcher."

Tough start: The third inning was the downfall for the Waynesboro baseball team on opening day against Lower Dauphin in a non-league game. The Indians fell to LD, 11-8.

Waynesboro allowed the Falcons to score nine runs off four hits in the third inning, and walked five batters to create a deficit the Indians could not come back from.

But it looked like Wayensboro (0-1) was going to forge a comeback in the fourth, bringing in five of its own in the next inning, but the Indians couldn’t find any more offensive power to close out the final three innings.

Waynesboro’s ace Kyle Hoffman started, but pitched only 1.2 innings before leaving with an injury. Bubba Hamilton was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, while Jarrett Biesecker was 2-for-4 and brought in one run.

Walkoff softball win: Fannett-Metal gave up a run to Forbes Road in the top of seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, but the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the inning to pull out a 4-3 Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference victory.

F-M's first two batters walked, and an error tied the game. The Cardinals elected to intentionally walk Morgan Ritchey, who already had a double and single, and pitched to Emily Metcalfe, but Metcalfe dropped in a base hit to score the winning run.

Jade Rhodes doubled for the Tigers and Olivia Hall had one for FR. Peyton Watkins rove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals. Brooke Harris earned the win, allowing six hits, while losing pitcher Courtney Schoen allowed only five.

Making contact: Waynesboro fell 5-3 in a non-league game to Lower Dauphin, starting the season with a challenging matchup against a top pitcher.

Waynesboro took on Ava Bottiglia, one of the best pitchers in the state, but still managed to rack up 10 hits in the loss.

"We left to many runners in scoring position and had multiple chances to cash in and didn't," Waynesboro caoch Aaron Burke said. "We played very well for our first game outside and it doesn't get any easier going to Chambersburg on Monday. This is a good test for us to get us prepared for league play."

Alexis Rosenberry, Abby Ebersole and Elizabeth Churchman each had two hits, and Katie Wise knocked a triple.
