F-F Highlights: Chambersburg wrestlers stage rally

With six bouts remaining, Chambersburg trailed New Oxford 24-12 in a non-league wrestling match Wednesday night.

But the Trojans won five of those six bouts, including a pin at 170 by freshman Luke Nichter to snap a 30-30 deadlock, and claimed a 36-30 victory over the Colonials.

Cole Grove (132) began the comeback with a pin, Carson Mello (138) won by decision, Aaron Rump (145) by forfeit and Drake Brenize (152) by a 4-3 decision for a 30-24 lead. After a New Oxford pin at 160, Nichter scored a pin in just 1:05 to clinch the victory.

"It was nice to have a quality kid like Luke at the end," Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. "Their kid came after him hard, but Luke took him down and turned him pretty quick."

Chambersburg (4-2) also got decisions from Guy Lozius (182) and Seth Runshaw (120), and Drew Peck (195) won by forfeit.

Mentzer said, "Both teams did a lot of bumping around and there were some unexpected twists and turns. There were a lot of physical matches and it was a great atmosphere.

"Guy Lozius got his first varsity (dual) win against a kid who had a winning record, and Phillipe (Lozius) had a close match (1-0 defeat) against a pretty good kid."

Flying points

Fannett-Metal built a 51-39 lead after three quarters against Forbes Road in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference boys basketball game Wednesday night.

The Tigers then survived a wild fourth quarter in which the teams combined for 59 points. The Cardinals outscored F-M 30-29, but couldn't put much of a dent in the lead.

Fannett-Metal, which shot 58 percent from the field, made 7 of 13 shots from 3-point range, including 5 of 8 by Mikell McGee, who racked up 37 points. He got help from Austin Raymer (14 points) and Lucas Wingert (13).

For Forbes Road, which had a four-game win streak halted, Aaron Schepis and Brycen Hohman each had 15 points and Matt Brown added 11.

Good times

Chambersburg dropped Mid Penn Commonwealth swimming verdicts to Carlisle on Wednesday - the boys falling 99-71 and the girls losing 108-61 - but Trojan coach Donnie Miller was happy with the results.

"We had some really good times, and especially in the boys, we won a good number of events, but we can't match Carlisle's depth," Miller said. "We gave a good effort. The kids did a lot of work over the break and we'll see how we do, because we have a lot of dual meets coming up."

For the boys, freshman CJ Pong hit two best times, winning the 200 free in 1:51.40 and placing second in the 100 free in 50.70. Avery Barley won the 50 free (22.69) and 100 backstroke (55.05), Jacob Greenwood won the 100 fly (57.06) and Michael Johnson took the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.64. The 200 medley relay of Pong, Barley, Greenwood and Sean Vessah also took a first place.

Abby Reichelderfer captured the 500 free in a season-best time of 5:41.30, and won the 200 IM in 2:26.50. Erika Rundquist took the 100 fly (1:07.90) and touched out a Herd swimmer for second in the 200 IM in a PR time of 2:28.91. Those two, plus Kandace Loup and Ashlyn Ellis, combined to win the 400 free relay in 4:06.04.
