F-F Highlights: Shippensburg takes down Delone

Shippensburg defeated Delone Catholic 69-56 in the first round of the Hound Invitational Wednesday night.

The Greyhounds (6-1) were led by point guard Cody Gustafson, who scored a career-high 29 points.

“I think they had a lot of trouble with Cody,” said Shippensburg coach Ray Staver. “Their best player probably fouled out because he had his hands full with him.”

Logan Alexander was in foul trouble early thanks to his task of covering Gustafson, heading into the locker room with three fouls at the half. Alexander fouled out in the fourth quarter, but not before putting up 18 points for Delone.

The Greyhounds led throughout most of the first half and took a nine-point lead into halftime. However in the third quarter the Squires made a run and got the lead down to three on a couple of occasions.

“I thought we got a little impatient on a couple of possessions,” Staver said. “But I told them we have gotten good results out of our set-plays tonight and not to go away from those.”

Staver’s words helped as Shippensburg outscored Delone Catholic (5-3) by 10 over the final six minutes to win by 13.

Games of the day

Waynesboro girls claimed the Biglerville Tournament title with a 64-26 win over the Canners, improving its winning streak to five games.

The Maidens (6-1) put four players in double figures led by Olivia Gardenhour and Cat Weber who each knocked down 15. Chelsea Cover scored 12 points all from beyond the arc, while Leah Blount scored a career-high 12 points.

Through two games at the Biglerville Tournament Waynesboro outscored opponents 119-46.

The Waynesboro boys team claimed a 57-35 win over Bermudian Springs in the consolation final of the New Oxford Tournament after a late-game loss to Hershey in the first round. Ten Indians put up points in the win, led by Cameron Keck with 11, and followed by Mitch Neterer with 10 points.

Waynesboro started off strong, shutting out the Eagles in the first quarter all the while racking up a 17-point lead.

"It was a good bounce back game for us," Waynesboro coach Tom Hoffman said. "We obviously got off to a great start and we really never looked back. We played our pressure defense pretty well, which resulted in a lot of transition points."

Making a splash

Shippensburg had a fine day at the Big Spring Bulldog Bash swim meet, as the girls placed third of 19 teams, and the boys finished fifth out of 15.

The Greyhound boys' top swimmer Sam Nonemaker placed first in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 50.10, and came in second in the 200 free (1:48.25). Chambersburg's Jacob Greenwood placed fourth behind Nonemaker in the 200 free at 1:49.47.

Greenwood and Avery Barley both came home with first place finishes on the Chambersburg boys team. Barley earned a top time in the 200 IM in 2:03.79, while Greenwood placed first in the 500 freestyle at 4:46.95 to break a pool and meet record by nearly three seconds.

"Both of those boys had some good swims today and they are right where we want them to be with the bigger picture in mind," Chambersburg coach Donnie Miller said. "We also had a lot of inexperienced swimmers have big days as well, dropping times from where they were a month ago and that is a great motivation going into the bulk of our season."

Barley also placed second in the 100 breast stroke at 1:06.05.

For the girls, the Lady Hounds had a number of top performers on the night. Makenna Morris placed second in the 200 free (2:04.03) and aided a second-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:49.19) with the help of Madison Osanitsch, who placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:32.73). Shippensburg's Madelyn Facchinei came in second in the 100 breast stroke at 1:13.90.

James Buchanan's Annabell McCullough touched the wall second in the girls 200 IM (2:18.70). Waynesboro's Derek Benchoff was the runner up in the boys 200 IM race at 2:05.59.
